First permanent Israeli embassy opens
ISRAEL'S diplomatic presence in Slovakia got a permanent home for the first time in March with the opening of its embasssy in Bratislava. The ceremony was attended by Zeev Boker, the Israeli ambassador to Slovakia, Yossi Gal, senior deputy director general for political affairs at the Israeli Foreign Ministry, and Oľga Algayerová, Slovakia's State Secretary for Foreign Affairs.

THE MYSTERIOUS unmarked jetliner that was parked at Bratislava airport until suddenly departing on March 11 belongs to an American company that owns other aircraft used by the CIA.
Slovakia’s mafia pioneer
If Slovakia has a Mafia Godfather, the police say, it is Miroslav Sýkora. A stalwart six-footer with cropped dark hair, Sýkora is believed to be one of the founders of organized crime in Slovakia in the early 1990s along with a former wrestler, Ján Takáč. At the outset, the pair agreed not to work with the Russian mafia, but the ink on their “deal” was scarcely dry before Sýkora broke it. His bad faith led to a split with Takáč, forming two competing mafia groups in the Slovak capital that would eventually become known as the Sýkorovci and the Takáčovci.

Fico: Slovakia could sign memorandum with USA early next week
Early next week, Slovakia should sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the USA that will result in the cancellation of visa duty for Slovak citizens, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said before the beginning of the EU summit in Brussels on March 13, the TASR wrote.
Constitutional Court puts Labsi extradition on hold
On March 13, a panel of judges of the Constitutional Court put a hold on the Supreme Court's order to extradite Mustapha Labsi to Algeria for criminal prosecution, court spokeswoman Viera Horniaková confirmed.

Slovakia's core inflation speeds to 4.3 percent
Food prices remained the driving factor of consumer price growth in February as they posted a m/m increase of further 0.3 percentage points to 8.6 percent. Core inflation in Slovakia that measures growth of consumer prices with the exclusion of regulated prices, and administrative interventions in the area of taxes thus went up 0.2 percentage points from January to 4.3 percent in the second month of 2008. In a monthly comparison food prices and core inflation rose by 0.5 percent in February, according to the Slovak Statistics Office. SITA

Three consortia confirm bids in toll collection tender
The Slovak-Swiss consortium ToSy.sk led by the company Elektrovod Holding Bratislava and the consortium headed by the Austrian company Kapsch TrafficCom have confirmed they submitted bids in the tender to supply a complete electronic toll collection service in Slovakia by today’s deadline.
