Czech and Slovak Glass in Exile
Hard, sharp, fragile. Transparent, colourful, painted, laminated, glued. Mirrored as well as matte. All of these adjectives can be applied truthfully to the glass artworks on exhibit at the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava.
Hidden by the Carpathian forests, two monuments to a proud past
The Červený Kameň and Smolenice castles and the Driny cave are probably the most popular tourist destinations in the Malé Karpaty (Small Carpathian mountains) in western Slovakia. But for tourists who are willing to tread less travelled roads, there is much more to explore.

Thousands discovering advantages of Austria
A century ago, Bratislava was a multicultural city where you were more likely to hear German or Hungarian on the streets than Slovak. Now that the last borders separating them from the rest of Europe have been raised, the residents of the Slovak capital are reasserting themselves as citizens of Central Europe – in part by buying up Austrian real estate.

Dzurinda purges SDKÚ
THE LEADER of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), the country's largest opposition party, moved to expel 14 members on March 8 in what could be the largest culling of party ranks in Slovak history. It is SDKÚ chairman Mikuláš Dzurinda's most radical step as party leader, the SITA newswire wrote. Internal SDKÚ bodies must approve the decision, and are widely expected to go along with it.
Visa memorandum with USA could come soon
SLOVAKIA will probably sign a memorandum of understanding opening the road to the lifting of visa requirements for Slovak tourists travelling to the USA, according to diplomatic sources with whom the ČTK newswire has spoken. Similar memoranda, signed in February by the Czech Republic and this month by Estonia and Latvia, have angered some EU members who oppose bilateral deals.

PETER Šťastný, an ice hockey legend and now an MEP, has repeated his call for Juraj Široký to step down from all his Slovak ice-hockey posts. According to a report on the SITA newswire on March 10, if his demand is not met, Štasný is threatening to leave Slovak Hockey's Hall of Fame and request the removal of the flag bearing his name and number, which currently hangs in the stadium of his club Slovan Bratislava. Šťastný regards Široký as a danger to democracy and sporting integrity because of his alleged cooperation with the secret service (ŠtB) during the communist regime.
