Construction Ministry has no knowledge of disputes about Eurofunds

Alfa Wind suspends wind farm project because of migrating birds

A company that plans to build a wind farm near the village of Dunajská Lužná, just ten kilometers from Bratislava, has announced it is temporarily suspending all development in the area. The project manager of Alfa Wind, s.r.o., Matej Hlôška, said the company intends to wait for a new Environmental Impact Assessment and wind measurement readings. One of the reasons for the suspension is the increased presence of migrating birds in the area of the planned wind park.

KDH breakaways establish new conservative party

Four prominent former members of the opposition Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH), are setting up a new political party, according to the SITA newswire. It will be known as the Conservative Democrats of Slovakia (KDS). MPs Vladimír Palko, Pavol Minárik, František Mikloško and Rudolf Bauer left the KDH at the end of February, saying it was no longer possible to renew the party and that it would be pointless to remain members.

Employers troubled by climate-energy package

The National Association of Employers (RUZ) in Slovakia is convinced that by adopting unilateral measures to prevent climate change the European Union might threaten business and put jobs at risk, the SITA newswire wrote. The General Secretary of the RUZ, Martin Hošták, said that pressing for such measures could lead companies to relocate factories to countries that have imposed no limits on emissions of greenhouse gases. "The RUZ is in favour of pursuing better environmental performance and energy efficiency, but without any loss of competitiveness," said Hošták, adding that employers who are members of the RUZ are appealing to the government of the Slovak Republic not to "sacrifice" jobs in Slovakia at the spring meeting of the European Council by automatically accepting the so-called climate-energy package.

SIS ordered to pay damages for Lexa-era crime

On March 12, the Pravda daily reported that after thirteen years, the Slovak intelligence service - the SIS – has been ordered to pay damages to Robert Krajòák, a businessman from Bratislava. The SIS had used unlawful surveillance at the time Ivan Lexa was its director after Krajòák launched a media campaign in 1995 to hold a referendum in which people would be asked whether Vladimír Meèiar should be dismissed as prime minister. The Bratislava Regional Court concluded the case yesterday, awarding damages to Krajòák. The judge said the court dealt with the case in camera because a secret file formed part of the evidence.
