Thieves steal mail
ABOUT 800 international parcels were stolen when thieves broke into a sorting office in Bratislava on March 2, the SITA newswire reported.
New owner for Carrefour retail chain in Slovakia
THE FRANCHISE to operate the Carrefour retail chain in Slovakia changed hands on March 1, according to the SITA newswire. The hypermarket chain is now run by a consortium of companies comprising ECM Group and ICS. Its four hypermarkets will continue under the Carrefour brand, based on a franchising agreement. The companies did not reveal the value of the transaction.

Tiso's gravestone vandalised
VANDALS spray-painted the gravestone of Slovakia's wartime president, Jozef Tiso, in the Martinský cemetery in Bratislava, the Nový Cas daily reported on February 27. They painted a Star of David on the gravestone, along with the slogan 'Stop Fascism'.
Arsonist torches paper warehouse
A BLAZE destroyed several warehouses at Metsä Tissue's paper mill in Žilina on March 2, causing tens of millions of crowns-worth of damage, according to the SITA newswire.
Slovaks were born on skis
MANY of my Slovak friends tell me they were still in diapers when they first stood on synthetic planks and braved the slopes of the High Tatras. Education system to get IT overhaul
A MODERNISATION plan approved by the Government in February will pour Sk11 billion (€340 million) into elementary and secondary schools over the next four years. The money, two thirds of which will be made up of European Union funds, will be used for purchasing computers, internet connections, training seminars and other items that will make the education system a pillar of the knowledge-based economy, Trend magazine wrote.

Sociálna Poisťovňa director won't receive jumbo bonus
THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL of the social security provider Sociálna Poisťovňa (SP) Ivan Bernátek had been on course for a tidy bonus this year. In February SP's supervisory board had proposed to pay him a bonus of almost Sk788,000. However, government spokesperson Silvia Glendová has now said that Prime Minister Robert Fico will block the payment, according to the Hospodárske Noviny financial daily. Bonus payments to SP directors are subject to approval by the government.
Nováky - one year later
A FEW dozen inhabitants of Nováky gathered in a park on March 2 to mark the first anniversary of the explosion at the town's Military Maintenance Plant that killed eight people and injured dozens.

THE CULTURE Ministry has budgeted Sk22 million (€680,000), excluding VAT, for the design of a new website that will sell tickets to artistic events at state institutions, the Sme daily wrote. It hopes to have the site up and running as early as this year.
