Slovakia trails in EU internet league
On March 26, the Pravda daily reported that Slovakia is among the EU's laggards when it comes to internet access. Only Poland and Bulgaria are worse. According to statistics published by Brussels, there were fewer than nine internet connections per 100 Slovaks at the beginning of this year. Poor access to the internet is preventing people in less-developed regions from working at home and therefore spending time with their families. The Slovak Telecommunication Office reported 931,000 high-speed internet lines in Slovakia with a 5.4-million population last year, of which 457,000 were mobile lines. However, the European Commission only compares figures for fixed lines. SITA
Mlynky problem not resolved, say deputy PM
Slovak Deputy Prime Minister for Minorities Dušan Čaplovič says that the Slovak government does not regard the problem of the Slovak minority in the Hungarian village of Mlynky as resolved. However, the government will continue dealing with the situation in a calm manner, the SITA wrote. It arose on March 25 after the local government decided to expel the local Slovak administration, and the association of Pilis Slovaks, from the so-called Slovak House in the village, claiming that it needs the premises.
Cabinet to discuss ways to help the Roma minority
Members of the Roma minority in Slovakia with low education, who have difficulties finding jobs, remain a problem, the SITA newswire wrote.
Belousovová: We're considering suing Csáky
The junior coalition Slovak National Party (SNS) is still considering filing legal action against ethnic-Hungarian SMK party leader Pál Csáky for statements that he made about the SNS, SNS vice-chair Anna Belousovová told SLOVAKIA on March 25.

Authority approves concentration of Czech technology firms
On March 17, the Antitrust Office (PMÚ) approved the merger of Eltodo and Vegacom, two divisions of Czech companies that operate in Slovakia, the SITA newswire wrote.
Marking Candle Demonstration brings parties together
On March 25, the Sme daily asked politicians to remark on the twentieth anniversary of the Candle Demonstration, when thousands of Slovaks gathered to light candles in protest of the Communist government’s suppression of religious freedom and other human rights. Although the demonstration was broken up by police wielding water cannons, it is considered to have set the stage for the Velvet Revolution.
Justice Ministry to open four more free legal aid centres
The Justice Ministry will soon be opening more Legal Aid Centres (CPP) – in Humenné, Bardejov (both the Prešov Region), Hlohovec (the Trnava Region) and Rimavská Sobota (the Banská Bystrica Region), Justice Minister Štefan Harabin said on March 24.

Tilting at windmills
THIS REGION may only dream of wind farms like the world's biggest at Horse Hollow in Texas, with its 421 turbines and 735 megawatt capacity, but Slovakia too will soon have to answer the challenge of wind power. There are several investors working on dozens of wind power projects here but they have yet to hear from the government whether wind will be a preferred energy source at all in Slovakia. Statements so far by government officials have given little cause for hope.
