Doctor’s group says outpatient medical care should end at 22:00
First-aid medical care (LSPP) in clinics should only be available until 22:00 as an analysis carried out by the Health Ministry has revealed that outpatient emergency care is sought by only a small number of people at night, the head of the Association of Private Doctors (ASL), Ladislav Pasztor, said on July 14 to the TASR newswire.
Italian economic development minister visits Mochovce
Slovakia's dominant energy producer Slovenské Elektrárne, a.s. (SE), in which Italian Enel company holds 66 percent ownrship has to conclude more than 300 contracts within the completion of the third and fourth reactors of the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant (EMO), said Giancarlo Aquilanti, the director of the EMO 3 and 4 projects. He met with Italian Minister of Economic Development Claudio Scajola who visited Mochovce on July 14, the SITA newswire wrote.
Court rules Bratislava should have allowed human rights protests
Bratislava’s Old Town council broke the law when it forbade NGOs from organising a demonstration in front of the Presidential Palace during Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit in June, the Bratislava Regional Court decided on July 14, the TASR newswire reported.
Cabinet discusses proposed merger of state health insurers
The intention of Slovakia's Ministry of Health to merge the two state-run health insurance companies Všeobecná Zdravotná Poisťovňa (VšZP) and Spoločná Zdravotná Poisťovňa (SZP) is one of the issues on the agenda of the July 15 regular Cabinet session, the SITA newswire wrote.
New forestry boss confers with agriculture minister
The state-run forestry company Lesy SR interim general director Ján Beňa has submitted his ideas on how the company should operate to Agriculture Minister Stanislav Becík on July 14, Becík told TASR on Saturday. "I appointed the interim director in accordance with my conscience," said the Minister, adding he made his decision after talks with representatives from forestry branch organisations, management and trade unionists. Beňa was appointed on July 10, replacing former director Jozef Mindaš, who - along with Lesy SR management - was accused of managing the state-run company in an inefficient and non-transparent manner.
Slovakia welcomes major pipeline plan
Slovakia along with four other EU countries has signed an agreement to move forward in the development of the Nabucco Gas Transmission System. Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Peter Stano told TASR that the agreement was a valuable step towards the diversification of routes and sources of natural gas.
SkyEurope's licence in Slovakia requires renewal in fall
The Slovak trade licence of low-cost airline SkyEurope will expire on October 25 the spokesman for the Ministry of Transport, Post Offices and Telecommunication, Stanislav Jurikovič, told the TASR newswire on July 13. If the ministry does not extend this licence, SkyEurope will not be able to continue to operate in Slovakia.
Slovakia may temporarily house Palestinian refugees
Slovakia will temporarily house 101 Palestinian refugees from Iraq, according to a proposed agreement between the Slovak Government, Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organisation for Migration that has been submitted by the Interior Ministry to the government for comments and fast-tracked proceedings, the TASR newswire wrote. The Palestinians could be placed in an asylum centre in Humenné in Prešov region operated by the Interior Ministry and then be subsequently transported to third countries. According to the document, this initiative will require €362,862 from the Interior Ministry's budget.
Slovak captures bronze medal in windsurfing
Slovak windsurfer Patrik Pollák garnered a bronze medal at a World Championship in the non-Olympic class Raceboard competition in the German town of Warnemuende on July 11, the TASR newswire reported. The world champion was a Pole, Maksimilan Wojcik, and the silver medal went to German Martin Moritz. “It was an unforgettable experience. I am happy that I succeeded in the end, as I did not do very well. Three times, it was a close achievement, but finally, I defended the third place,” Pollák told TASR, adding that it was one of the biggest championships recently for the high number of countries and contestants participating. Slovak President Gašparovič signs energy sector laws
President Ivan Gašparovič signed into law a bill to support renewable energy sources on July 13 and under this law energy companies that generate electrical energy from renewable sources will enjoy a price guarantee for fifteen years, the SITA newswire wrote.
KPMG study reports Slovakia is slow in drawing new EU programming funds
The drawing down of EU funds for Operational Programmes (OP) in Slovakia hasn't been favourable over the first two years of the 2007-2013 programming period according to a recently-published study by the KPMG consultancy examining EU funds’ use in central and eastern Europe (CEE) released in mid-July, the TASR newswire wrote.

As expected, Béla Bugár was elected the first chairman of the new party Most – Híd at the party's founding congress in Šamorín on July 11. Only three of six deputy chairmen posts were filled. Government to refinance loans for Komárno shipbuilder in southern Slovakia
A shipbuilding company in Komárno will not have to lay off one fifth of its 1,000 workers after Economy Minister Ľubomír Jahnátek agreed to provide long-term loans to build ships from a state-owned bank, the TASR newswire wrote on July 10. The agreement between Jahnátek and Eximbanka will refinance Slovenské Lodenice Komarno's old loans.
Increased pace of inflation in June in Slovakia
Inflation, measured according to national methodology, increased in pace for the first time in 2009 in the month of June, rising from 2.2 percent year-on-year in May to 2.4 percent in June, the TASR newswire reported, citing data from Slovakia’s Statistics Office released on July 10. Consumer prices in Slovakia rose by an average of 2.7 percent in the first six months of 2009.

Cabinet approves investment incentives of €28 million for five firms
THE LIST of foreign investors in Slovakia enjoying investment incentives has expanded. On July 8, the government of Robert Fico approved investment incentives for five companies totalling €28 million. Carmaker Kia Motors will receive the highest sum – €15 million – the SITA newswire wrote.

Štrbské Pleso aims for semi-finals of “7 Wonders of Nature”
The Štrbské Pleso mountain lake in the High Tatras has a chance of making it into the semi-finals of an internet voting competition to choose the seven natural wonders of the world. So far, it is in tenth place in the category rivers, lakes, and waterfalls. Altogether, 261 candidates in seven categories have been nominated. From each category, 11 natural locations will go to the semi-finals. The only Slovak candidate is Štrbské Pleso, which is the second biggest lake in the High Tatras. Voting on the internet ended on Tuesday, July 7, and the results will see 77 candidates advance to the next round.
