X-rays of Ukrainian trains causes dispute
UKRAINE does not like having its trains checked with x-rays at border crossings when entering Slovakia’s territory and is threatening to halt cargo rail transport into Slovakia. It claims that the x-ray procedure is harming Ukrainian locomotive engineers. Slovakia disputes the accusations and says measurements by the Slovak Public Health Office show there is no possibility of harmful levels of radiation, the public broadcaster Slovak Television (STV) reported on July 13.
Police investigating Pohoda festival tragedy
Police are looking into whether the crime of endangering the public was committed vis-a-vis the tragedy that took place at the Pohoda music festival on Saturday, Police Corps spokesman Martin Korch told news wire TASR on July 18. A severe storm accompanied by gusts of wind hit the area at around 4:00 p.m. on July 18, bringing down a large tent covering the O2 Arena. The tragedy claimed the life of a 29-year-old man from Piešťany (Trnava region).
One person dies and dozens are injured at Pohoda open-air festival
SLOVAKIA's biggest open-air music festival, called Pohoda, ended tragically after a massive thunderstorm and gale-level winds tore down the tent covering the O2 Arena, which was hosting a concert attended by hundreds of people on July 18. The accident has taken the life of a 29-year-old man from Piestany and another 52 people were injured at the festival’s site – the military airport in Trenčín, according to the website of daily Sme. Forty people were hospitalized, said Sme.

Outgoing NATO head to visit Slovakia on Friday
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is to pay his last visit to Slovakia before his term in office ends. He is coming to Bratislava onFriday, July 17 and will meet with Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič, Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák and Defense Minister Jaroslav Baška, the SITA newswire wrote. Scheffer, from the Netherlands, took up the post of NATO Secretary-General in 2004.
Plane crash at Ražňany airport claims two lives
The crash of an ultra-light sport plane near the airport in Ražňany on the evening of July 15 claimed two victims. A 64-year-old pilot from Veľký Šariš died immediately after the single-engine Viper SD aircraft crashed at about 19:00 between the Torysa River and the airport at Ražňany. The second pilot, 34 years old, died the next day in a Prešov hospital, the SITA newswire wrote. Slovak Health Ministry approves merger of state health insurers
A Health Ministry plan to de facto terminate the state-run SZS insurance company by merging it into another state insurer, VšZP, between January 2010 and April 2011 was given the go-ahead by the government on July 15, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovak government increases welfare benefits
According to a proposal drawn up by the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family that was approved by the government on July 15, the state welfare benefit for single people without children will be increased by €2.07 to €60.50 per month as of September, the TASR newswire wrote.

NGOs request Slovak President to not sign State Language Act
An umbrella association of ethnic-Hungarian organisations called the Round Table of Hungarians in Slovakia has appealed to Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič to not sign the recently-approved amendment to the State Language Act, said Kálman Petocz from the Information Centre Forum that is part of the umbrella group, the TASR newswire wrote.
Slovak Interior Minister says police identified three Chinese "men in black"
Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák said at a press conference on July 14 that the police have identified the three most aggressive Chinese "men in black" who attacked Slovak human rights activists in front of the Presidential Palace in Bratislava during a protest in June prior to the visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovak Television remains without an approved budget
The STV Council, the governing body of public service Slovak Television (STV) failed to approve a modified draft budget and program plan for the broadcaster on July 14, the SITA newswire wrote. STV management is now to submit a new third draft budget and program plan by August 14.
Slovakia’s June inflation rate hits historic low of 0.7 percent
Harmonised inflation in June met analysts' expectations and posted the lowest level ever with consumer prices in Slovakia, measured by the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) of the European Union, showing 0.7 percent year-on-year growth, lower than the previously historic low reported in May of 1.1 percent, the Slovak Statistics Office reported.
Cabinet approves state help for mortgage debtors
Beginning October of this year, the Slovak government might be able to provide assistance to citizens who cannot repay their mortgages as a result of the economic crisis. The government cabinet adopted a proposal at its meeting on July 15 for the Finance Ministry to prepare the necessary legislative conditions to implement the programme in cooperation with the Slovak Banking Association (SBA) and the bailout agency Slovenská Konsolidačná, a.s. The proposed aid scheme will consist of two stages, the SITA newswire wrote.
