Danubian Biogas plans a bio power plant for eastern Slovakia
The Danubian Biogas company plans to build a biogas-fueled power plant in the eastern Slovak town of Moldava nad Bodvou. The company wants to invest approximately €4.3 million in the project, the SITA newswire wrote.
Brussels tells Slovakia to cut mobile phone termination rates
In a letter sent on Monday, September 7, the European Commission has repeated its calls for the Slovak telecommunications regulator, Telekomunikačný Úrad Slovenskej Republiky, to bring mobile termination rates to more competitive levels in Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported.

Prime Minister Fico met on September 7 with a delegation from the American Jewish Committee led by Rabbi Andrew Baker who also is the Personal Representative for Combating Anti-Semitism of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the SITA newswire wrote.

THOUGH attorney Peter Bartošík in general is somewhat pessimistic about the likelihood of recovering substantial parts of debts owed by SkyEurope, he nevertheless is advising his clients to submit claims. “As lawyers, too, are not immune to cancelled flights, I will also be submitting my own claims against SkyEurope,” Bartošík, a partner in the B & S Legal firm, said in an interview with The Slovak Spectator. Bartošík also explained the process of bankruptcy and talked about customers’ options in recovering their losses.

Hundreds of Slovaks protest against ‘Roma crime’ in Krompachy
A total of 300 people took part in a protest rally outside the municipal office in the town of Krompachy in Košice region on Saturday, September 5, with the demonstration aimed against what its organisers from Slovensá Pospolitosť (Slovak Togetherness) call "Roma crime", the TASR newswire wrote. Around 100 Pospolitost supporters, with another 200 local citizens, attended the rally. Marián Kotleba, one of Slovenská Pospolitosť's leaders, was also supposed to take part in the protest, however, the head of Slovakia‘s Police Corps Presidium, Ján Packa, told TASR that Kotleba had been arrested earlier in the day in Banská Bystrica and charged with inciting national, racial and ethnic hatred. The rally participants said they were challenging the failure of state authorities to deal with crimes perpetrated by the Roma, particularly in eastern Slovakia. In addition to Pospolitosť members, local citizens said they are outraged at crimes committed by Roma and demanded that authorities start tackling the issue.
Komárno hosts European Day of Jewish Culture
The Jewish Community of Komárno in Nitra region organised celebrations of the 10th European Day of Jewish Culture on Sunday, September 6, as part of Europe-wide events in more than thirty countries, the TASR newswire reported.
Dalai Lama to receive Human Rights Award in Slovakia
Tenzin Gyatso, better-known as the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, will visit Slovakia between September 8 and 10 and will receive the Ján Langoš Award from the Foundation of the same name that honours fighters for human rights, officials of the Ján Langoš Foundation told the TASR newswire on September 4.
Slovak PM Robert Fico sues Sme daily over cartoon
Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is demanding €33,000 in damages for a cartoon, which he says made fun of his serious health condition while also ridiculing him, the daily Sme reported. Sme published the cartoon by Martin Šútovec, alias Shooty, which features Fico and a physician who is checking the PM’s cervical spine problems. The x-rays show that Fico has no spine while the physician is telling him that he has only “phantom pains”. The cartoon ran in July when Fico was having problems with his neck and spine and the cabinet office was secretive of his condition. Fico claims that the daily was making fun of his health condition. Fico said that a health condition must not be an object of fun.
Budget gap widens
ONE year ago Slovakia was still expressing confidence about its ability to tame its budget deficit, while at the same time boasting about having one of the fastest growing economies in the European Union. But it has become clear over the past three months that the deficit will not only exceed the 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) limit – as set by the Maastricht criteria for euro membership – but might climb to 5 or even 6 percent. By the end of August the state budget deficit had reached €1.206 billion, over €200 million more than the deficit originally forecast for the whole of 2009.

SND’s director steps down
A MANAGEMENT crisis at the Slovak National Theatre (SND) culminated on August 27 when several important members of senior management resigned. Štefan Bučko, Artistic Director of SND Drama, Pavol Smolík, Artistic Director of SND Opera, Rastislav Štúr, Chief Conductor, and Slavomír Jakubek, the theatre’s dramatic advisor all resigned, according to the Culture Ministry spokesman, Jozef Bednár. In response, the SND Director General Silvia Hroncová resigned.
Čaplovič: Interblue contract will end
SLOVAKIA’s Deputy Prime Minister for a Knowledge-based Society, European Affairs, Human Rights and Minorities, Dušan Čaplovič, was placed in charge of the Environment Ministry by President Ivan Gašparovič on Friday, August 28 after the prime minister banned the Slovak National Party (SNS), a junior coalition member, from naming a successor minister.

THE RATE OF contraction of the Slovak economy slowed slightly in the second quarter of 2009 compared to the first three months of the year. This brought some cheer to politicians in urgent need of good news on the state of economy, but market watchers remained cautious and counselled more patience. They say the economy’s recovery will take many more months – if not years – since the structure of Slovakia’s gross domestic product (GDP) was not particularly healthy in the second quarter.
