Sailing on the lines
KOPPEL Villa, one of the venues of the Gallery of Ján Koniarek in Trnava, which sits on the edge of the town’s historical area, has recently become the showcase for an exhibition of special treasures from the gallery’s collections. Some of the works displayed as part of the Plavba líniami (Sailing on the Lines) exhibition, which will last for a month, have never been seen by the public before.
Guantánamo
WHEN you’re locked up at Guantánamo, you probably don’t care much in which country you’ll end-up, as long as you get out. But still, the trio of prisoners expected to arrive in Slovakia within a couple of weeks is up for a rather different experience from the inmates heading for Britain, France, Spain, or other Western countries. In what ways is Slovakia unique?
A few more gloomy months to come for labour
THOUGH the horizon is showing clearer contours of an economic recovery in 2010, data on available jobs coupled with a still rising jobless rate do not give Slovakia’s army of unemployed much hope right now. In December 2009, the country recorded 116,000 more unemployed than a year earlier and a total of more than 335,000 jobless citizens.

Hundreds buy trees in Vlčia as gifts
UP TO the end of last year 376 people had bought a tree in the Private Nature Reserve Vlčia, Prešov Region, from the Wolf Forest Protection Association. Purchasers bought trees for themselves or for loved ones, and members of the association then planted them and will tend them. Buyers also got a certificate. “Last year, birthday gifts prevailed, together with wedding gifts, gifts given upon the birth of a child, and also Christmas gifts,” Dáša Lukáčová of the Wolf Association told the SITA newswire. Lukáčová manages the Buy Yourself Your Own Tree project.
Remarkable Romanesque rotundas reconstructed
THE EARLY Romanesque churches and rotundas on Slovak territory are among the oldest religious buildings in the whole region. Some of them date back to as early as the 9th and 10th centuries, soon after Christianity was brought here, and although they have been rebuilt and restored many times they still require maintenance and reconstruction.
Potential for trade intrigues both Slovakia and India
DURING the communist era, there were intensive contacts between Czechoslovakia and India. The fall of the Iron Curtain, the emergence of Slovakia as an independent state and its initiation of a market economy diminished the level of past economic cooperation but both countries still see a huge, mutual potential. While India is a global centre for IT outsourcing, it also offers a vast market of more than 1 billion people. Slovakia attracts Indian investors with its favourable tax system, membership in the European Union and the eurozone, and an excellent geographic position in the middle of Europe.
Banks oppose state plan to simplify fees
A GUIDING thread to help bank clients walk through the maze of bank fees: this is how the state portrays its latest proposed law directed at the banking sector. But banks say that instead of casting more light on their fees the state is about to intervene in the free market and is preparing the ground for price regulation.

India attracts more and more Slovaks
THE TAJ MAHAL, Ladakh, the Himalayas, Yoga, Ayurveda. All these and many more jump to mind when thinking about India. Slovaks travel to India to see ancient monuments and exotic wildlife as well as to trek in the Himalayas, or have treatments at spas and wellness centres. Tourist agencies and tour operators report a growing interest among Slovaks in visiting India.
For India development is not a race but a goal
STEREOTYPES about India’s outsourcing being confined to back office operations have been eroding just as the passage of time and economic development has washed away many other misperceptions, especially in light of the growing number of global research centres being located in India, says Homai Saha, Ambassador of India to Slovakia. She says that her country’s outsourcing is no longer confined to simple outsourcing but is now based on innovation and added value. Saha does not look at future economic growth in India, which escaped relatively unscathed from the economic crisis, as part of a race with other countries but rather as a positive force that can lift up the almost 300 million citizens who currently are living below the poverty level.
