Anastasia
WHEN Slovakia first participated at the Winter Olympics in 1994 no one would have guessed that the country’s first gold will first be won by someone called Anastasia. Jana, Zuzana, Mária, Anna, Eva, Martina, or Beáta perhaps. But foreign-sounding Anastasia? In a country, which unlike America, Britain, France, or Germany is unaccustomed to welcoming almost any immigrants, the historic feat of Russian-born Anastasia Kuzmina provides two opportunities.
Encouraging preventive check-ups
SLOVAKIA is among the countries with a health-care system that offers free preventive medical check-ups. Both health insurers and physicians perceive regular check-ups as a valuable tool for detecting diseases or other medical conditions at an early stage or even as a way to prevent the occurrence of some diseases and thus an important step in improving the overall health of the population. In spite of this many Slovaks do not take the opportunity to have regular check-ups, even when they are available for free. The good news is that the trend is moving at least slightly up.
Flux in labour market continues in 2010
Global economic downturn, financial crisis and recession will probably become less frequently used terms in upcoming business reports as the most recent figures on industrial production in Slovakia blessed market watchers, business people and ordinary citizens with the best results in many months and the economic forecasts for GDP growth in 2010 look more favourable than they have been for all of last year.
Talent management – a tool for future success
Talent is a term which requires no additional definition for most readers while talent management should be a part of the functioning of society across all economic and public spheres. Yet, the term ‘talent management’ probably calls for further explanation. In brief, it could be defined as the ability of an organisation to identify, acquire, retain and develop the most skilled people with the goal of placing them in leading and highly specialised positions in the future. However, in a 2006 poll among managers in Europe, only about 20 percent of them were able to formally define what talent management was even though 51 percent of them claimed that they were actively performing talent management-related activities.
Resurrection of a mammoth?
IT TOOK several years for the previous government to dismantle the onetime railway goliath, Železnice Slovenskej Republiky (ŽSR), into three independent businesses. Now the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico is toying with the idea of reassembling the national railway giant by bringing the current railway network operator and the passenger and cargo transport companies under one roof. The country’s antitrust authority instantly said there were problems with the plan, suggesting that it not only goes against the spirit of liberalisation and discriminates against other competitors in the railway market, but that it also will attract unwanted attention from the European Commission. The Transportation Ministry said that its goal is to interconnect the state-run railway companies under one holding company with three subsidiaries by January 1, 2011 in order to coordinate the management of the railway companies so that state funds are used more effectively.

Old citadel and Aupark to coexist in Košice
AT THE beginning of February remains of stone walls were found underneath Liberators’ Square (Námestie osloboditeľov) in Košice during trenching work for a future Aupark business and relaxation centre. Aupark’s investor said the archaeological finding does not threaten construction of the centre in any way and preliminary assessment is that the findings could be fragments of the foundation of a military citadel.
