Slovak football coach Weiss exits post-match press conference in a huff
After Slovakia's national football team lost the match with Paraguay 0-2 in the Group F second round of the FIFA World Cup 2010 held in South Africa, the atmosphere at the meet-and-greet between the press and couch Vladimír Weiss was far from cordial, the TASR newswire wrote. Although the unexpected tie between Italy and New Zealand 1-1 has unexpectedly left the door open for Slovakia, Weiss answered only two match-related questions from journalists. When asked whether he was conscious of any mistakes Slovak team did in the match-up, he refused to answer, choosing to leave instead. The 45-year-old coach of the World Cup team – which is last in its group at this point in time – left players Marek Hamšík, Peter Pekárik, Ján Ďurica, Filip Hološko and Vladimír Weiss Jr. to fend for themselves with the media.

Dozens of Slovak judges launch petition against demotion of Judge Benešová
Dozens of judges in Slovakia have launched a petition drive against a decision made by the country’s Supreme Court on June 7 to demote a female colleague from a regional court to a lower court, a move that they view as bullying and harsh treatment in fabricated proceedings, the TASR newswire reported. The 51 signers of the petition claim that the decision was orchestrated to keep Judge Anna Benešová from adjudicating in libel actions initiated by Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin. Her transfer from Bratislava Regional Court to the first-instance court in the district town of Levice (in Nitra region), according to them, is tantamount to being disbarred as a judge.

Slovakia loses 0:2 to Paraguay and looks likely to exit the World Cup
Slovakia on Sunday lost 0:2 to Paraguay in their second Group F game in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and now appears unlikely to progress further in the tournament unless they can put in a much better performance against Italy on June 24 and win the match, the TASR newswire wrote. Slovakia needed to win Sunday's match more than Paraguay after both teams drew their opening matches last Tuesday, June 15. Paraguay had secured a point against group front-runner Italy, while Slovakia was held to a tie by New Zealand, which before the tournament began at least, was seen as the weakest team in the group. It was Paraguay which appeared more willing to attack in the first half hour. The Slovak defence seemed to be coping reasonably well until the 27th minute when they gave the ball away after a throw-in deep in their own half. Paraguay's Barrios pounced on the loose ball and slipped it to Vera, who curled it with the outside of his boot past Slovak goalkeeper Ján Mucha, TASR wrote. Slovakia was forced more onto the attack. Their only good chance came from a corner in the 36th minute, when Kornel Salata was given a free header but he failed to keep the ball down, sending it well over the bar. Slovakia started the second half fairly brightly, trying to work the ball down the wings, but they appeared lacking enough guile to break down the Paraguayan defence and were unable to create much at all. As the half progressed, they became more and more frustrated, reverting to long-ball tactics, which were easily dealt with by the South Americans, who looked extremely comfortable and able to step up a gear if required.

"I began acting in Bratislava. I was admitted (to university), but after the holidays an order from political circles in Uherské Hradiště (now in the Czech Republic) was received, stating that it wasn't desirable for me to study. And then Chancellor Andrej Bagar became angry, because he knew our family and he saw my rehearsals. He said 'It isn't acceptable that a grandson of Jozef Hollý, obviously talented, won't be admitted," Abrhám told the TASR newswire, adding that he became an actor thanks to Bagar.
Slovaks still prefer English to French
WITH only around 2.1 percent of Slovaks speaking French compared to 32 percent speaking English, according to a recent Eurobarometer survey by the European Commission, the language of Moliere remains a rarity rather than the norm on Slovak CVs. However, a coin has two sides, and an apparent disadvantage can be a valuable asset, French teachers and diplomats agree.
Bounce in GDP growth forecasts
MARKETS get edgy whenever institutions expected to keep their fingers on the pulse of the economy fail to react to or reflect changing conditions. Musicians serenade voters
TO LURE as many voters as possible to cast ballots on election day, officials in the municipality of Mýtna (Banská Bystrica Region) prepared a cultural programme lasting the entire day. The day’s events began at 10:00 with entertainment from the popular band Ščamba from eastern Slovakia. They called their gig ‘Ščamba Votes in Mýtna’ and the musicians really did cast their votes in this municipality. The folk ensemble Ďatelinka from Hriňová took over in the afternoon in attracting voters and all citizens had a chance to help knock down the town’s maypole, which had been left standing until election day. The LCB Band from Lučenec, a country group, took the stage later in the day and performed for those who had already voted as well as those still contemplating their decision. Everyone was offered free goulash and playground activities were available for their children.
