Fico says Smer supports Euro Stabilization Facility and attacks Radičová
Outgoing Prime Minister Robert Fico provided his standpoint on the meeting held on June 30 between President Ivan Gašparovič and Iveta Radičová, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) election leader, regarding Slovakia’s position on the EU’s Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the SITA newswire reported.
Slovakia’s public budget deficit reaches €2.4 billion after first half of 2010
Slovakia’s state budget deficit continues to deepen and according to the figures released by the Slovak Finance Ministry, the deficit reached €2.436 billion at the end of June, which was €360 million more than at the end of May. In annual terms, the deficit more than doubled compared with the deficit of €1.108 billion reported at the end of June 2009. The government projected the deficit for all of 2010 to reach €3.746 billion, the SITA newswire wrote.
New Slovak cabinet takes shape
THE COALITION of four centre-right parties which is set to form Slovakia’s next government has agreed on the division of ministerial posts. Two weeks after the general election, most of the likely names are already known, although not officially confirmed; the actual composition of the cabinet should become known prior to the first parliamentary session, which is due to convene on July 8. However, there are signs that the July 8 session, whose first job will be to approve the new government, may not go smoothly given outgoing Prime Minister Robert Fico’s dissatisfaction with his party’s allocation of posts on parliamentary committee.
Hunger strike continues by three Guantanamo detainees in Slovakia
Three former detainees from Guantanamo Bay who were transferred to Slovakia in January are continuing their hunger strike to protest against the allegedly bad conditions that they are receiving in Slovakia and the treatment they are receiving from Slovak authorities at a detention facility in Medveďov in Trnava region, one of the detainees Adel Fattouh Al-Gazzar told the TASR newswire on June 30. Al-Gazzar said that the three men are prepared to continue the hunger strike until their problems are resolved.
Slovakia takes up Visegrad Four presidency on July 1
Slovakia will preside over the Visegrad Four (the V4: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia) for one year beginning July 1 and the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman, Peter Stano, informed the TASR newswire that Slovakia actually get the transfer of powers from Hungary at the upcoming V4 summit, which will probably take place in mid-July. The main theme for the upcoming year will be 'Efficient Visegrad - Continuity, Integrity, Solidarity and Awareness'. Slovakia wants to build on the experience and success of its predecessors and concentrate on projects and activities which will bring advantages to the citizens of the V4 and cushion the effects of the global economic crisis.
Radičová says decision on EU guarantee mechanism is irreversible
The incoming government has inherited a political decision concerning the creation of a new EU guarantee mechanism that is designed to give a helping hand to countries that find themselves in financial trouble and that decision is irreversible, said Prime Minister-designate Iveta Radičová of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) at a meeting with Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič on June 30, the TASR newswire reported.
British hiker dies in Slovak mountains
Mountain rescuers in Slovenský Raj assisted in the attempted resuscitation of a 69-year-old hiker from England. The hiker was then treated by a doctor who came via helicopter but resuscitation attempts failed, the TASR newswire wrote on June 30. According to one of Slovenský Raj mountain rescuers, Dušan Leskovjanský, the Englishman may have experienced sudden faintness but the exact cause of death will only be known after an autopsy.
