Court rejects Fico’s lawsuit against Petit Press over cartoon published in Sme

A judge from the Bratislava IV District Court rejected the lawsuit filed by former Prime Minister Robert Fico against Petit Press, the publisher of the Sme daily, involving a demand for €33,000 because of a cartoon by Martin Shooty Šútovec released on July 9, 2009, which depicted the then-prime minister at the doctor’s appointment checking an x-ray that showed no spine, the SITA newswire wrote.

PM Radičová says Slovakia cannot decide on EFSF without parliament’s approval

Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová said she cannot give any consent to allocate resources for the European financial guarantee mechanism, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), without the approval of the Slovak government and parliament, the TASR newswire reported after her meeting Monday with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy. “The former government gave general consent on May 10, but I will respect the European legislation as well as Slovakia’s. At first, I’ll lay out the idea to the government members, then the coalition partners and, finally, to parliament. Only then can Slovakia adopt an official stance,” said Radičová, adding that EFSF will be discussed at a government session on July 14.

Police comment on accused murderer of Nitra councillor

Štefan K., accused of murdering Nitra regional councillor László Basternak, a member of the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), may face a 25-year prison sentence or even life in prison, Police Corps Vice-president Michal Kopčík told a press conference on Monday, July 12, in Bratislava, the TASR newswire reported. He specified that Basternak, formerly the mayor of the town of Hurbanovo, was murdered on Friday, July 9, at 9:05 p.m. with one gunshot to his head. The perpetrator hopped into his car and attempted to flee the scene, Kopčík added. However, Basternak's stepson fired 12 gunshots, hitting the murderer in the elbow. He then got out of the immobilised car and ran away, but the police caught up with him and arrested him on Saturday.

Slovakia’s new Prime Minister Iveta Radičová departed on Monday, July 12, for a two-day working visit to Brussels for talks with officials of the European Union and NATO, both of which accepted Slovakia as a member in 2004, the TASR newswire wrote. Man with automatic rifle kidnaps Slovak police patrol and is later killed

An as-yet unnamed man aged 28 took a two-member police patrol hostage near the town of Šaľa in Nitra region on Sunday evening, July 11, the TASR newswire was told by Nitra Regional Police Directorate spokesperson Renáta Čuháková on Monday. According to a newspaper report, the man holding the police officers was eventually shot dead by other officers. The incident occurred when the police patrol attempted to stop and check the driver of a Škoda Felicia car. The driver did not stop, however, and the patrol set off in pursuit. When the car crashed into a pylon, two men jumped out and attempted to escape. The officers were able to catch one man, while the other darted into a nearby house.
