ČSOB sells its pension fund firm
POŠTOVÁ Banka will acquire 100-percent control over ČSOB d.s.s., a pension fund management company previously owned by ČSOB bank, the SITA newswire reported.
SNS soap opera reloaded
JÁN Slota and Anna Belousovová buried the hatchet in 2003 after their personal vendettas kept both the Slovak National Party (SNS) and Slota’s short-lived revenge party, the Real Slovak National Party (PSNS), from reaching parliament in 2002. They even had a kiss at a press conference to seal their alliance in front of television cameras and photographers. Eight years later it appears as if their unification was nothing but a temporary ceasefire while the party was struggling to crawl closer to power or actually began exercising it thanks to Robert Fico’s notorious decision to invite the SNS to form a government with him in 2006.

COMPULSORY study of the English language will remain in the amendment to the School Act as Slovakia’s parliament decided on February 1 to reject an objection raised by President Ivan Gašparovič.
Labour Code's new contours revealed
A FAIRER law giving more protection to those who need it the most is one of the banners under which the government of Iveta Radičová unveiled the contours of its planned changes to the country’s Labour Code. The centre-right government also said it intends to make the law more flexible to better meet the needs of the economy while reducing unnecessary bureaucracy.

Judiciary to become a little less cosy
JUDICIAL clerks working in Slovakia’s courts can no longer expect guaranteed and largely silent promotion to positions as judges, and sitting judges will have to get used to much more personal information about them being made public, after parliament passed a law on judges which the government is presenting as a breakthrough reform in its drive to restore public trust in the judiciary. The opposition, however, is complaining that the changes are unconstitutional.
Abandoned customs houses get new uses
The old, unused customs house in Slovenské Ďarmoty in Veľký Krtíš district in eastern Slovakia is likely to be turned into a municipal house of services. Just a few years ago the customs house was a busy checkpoint on the border with Hungary but after several unsuccessful attempts by the Customs Directorate to sell the two unused buildings to a private owner the municipality has shown interest in acquiring and using the complex.

SLOVAKIA has been categorised as a ‘moderate innovator’ on the Innovation Union Scoreboard (IUS), a chart assessing the innovation performance of 28 European states in 2010, the TASR newswire reported.
Earthquake felt in southern Slovakia
SOUTHERN Slovakia experienced a minor earthquake on the evening of January 29. The epicentre was in Hungary, only 33 kilometres south-east of Komárno, a town on the Slovak-Hungarian border.
FNM wants to sell heating firms
THE NATIONAL Property Fund (FNM), Slovakia’s agency that holds many state assets and deals with issues of privatisation, has decided that selling the country’s six largest central heating companies which it owns to private companies would be advantageous.
