Slovaks leave strife-torn Egypt
SLOVAK travel agency Kartágo Tours, which specialises in holiday trips to Egypt, cancelled two planned excursions and will relocate all Slovak tourists from Egypt by February 5, the SITA newswire reported. The move came following days of increasingly violent civil unrest centred on the the capital, Cairo.
Orbán visits Slovakia
IF SLOVAKIA and Hungary were to define their mutual relationship in Facebook terms, nothing would suit better than the “it’s complicated” category. Despite that, elected officials from the two countries have been visiting each other often in recent months and on January 28 Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made the first official visit to Slovakia in 12 years.
Old Bridge reopens for cyclists and walkers
The president of Bratislava Region, Pavol Frešo, welcomed the reopening of Bratislava’s Old Bridge on January 7 for pedestrians and cyclists. The Old Bridge connects the historic centre of Bratislava with the large residential area of Petržalka across the Danube River. Frešo told the TASR newswire that he is pleased that the bridge has been reopened at least for pedestrians and bikers, adding that the bridge is important from a historical point of view. “This construction, more than one hundred years old, has been connecting the right and the left banks of the Danube River and thus it helped to create Bratislava. Today, that situation has returned and I am very pleased with the reopening and the bridge being made available at least partially to the public,” Frešo stated.

One-third of Košice's public transport drivers go on strike
Roughly a third of drivers working for the Košice Public Transport Company (DPMK) took part in a strike on Thursday, February 3, to express opposition to proposed changes to the Labour Code, the TASR newswire reported DPMK board chairman Igor Jutka as saying.
Forty-five people brought to Slovakia from Egypt by government aircraft
A total of 34 Slovaks, eight Czechs, one Hungarian and two Portuguese, all of whom had been living and working in Egypt, were brought to Slovakia by an aircraft specially arranged by the Slovak government on Thursday, February 3, the TASR newswire reported. The evacuation was organised following several days of violent anti-government protests affecting cities in Egypt.

Trade unions to halt public transport in Košice
Trade unions are planning to hold a strike in Košice on Thursday, February 3, between 14:30 and 15:00 to express their disapproval of projected changes to the Labour Code that they claim will translate into worse conditions for both employees and unions, head of the KOVO trade union Emil Machyňa told the TASR newswire on Wednesday.

Slovakia sends special flight to bring citizens back from Egypt
Due to the current civil unrest in Egypt, the Slovak government has organised a special aircraft to bring home Slovaks who have been living or working in Egypt for a long time, Foreign Affairs Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda told the TASR newswire on February 2. Dzurinda noted that there are around 100 such Slovak citizens in Egypt. The plane left Bratislava on Thursday, February 3, bound for Cairo and Hurghada, Slovak newswires reported.
Harabin: Supreme Court justices to have monthly salaries cut by €325
Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin has been obliged to issue new salary instructions whereby all judges at the court will have their monthly salaries cut by €325 as of January, court spokesman Michal Jurči told the TASR newswire on Wednesday, February 2.

The former first vice-chair of the Slovak National Party (SNS) Anna Belousovová was expelled from the party on Wednesday, February 2, with all 14 members of the SNS presidium backing the move, vice-chairs Andrej Danko, Ján Ikrenyi and Rafael Rafaj told the TASR newswire. “The presidium also called on Anna Belousovová to give up her MP’s seat,” said Danko.

Prices for residential real estate in Slovakia declined last year by an average of 3.9 percent. The average price per square metre of residential real estate reached €1,291 in 2010, the SITA newswire wrote on February 2.
