Flat sales cast long shadow on SDKÚ
ONE OF the main centre-right parties, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), is facing corruption allegations over two flats which prominent members bought 11 years ago at allegedly low prices from a company that later won lucrative orders from the state. While the SDKÚ has called the allegations a pre-election stunt, the prime minister made clear she would like to see the matter explained.

Slovak economy slows
GROWTH in Slovakia’s economy slowed in the third quarter of 2011 even though it remained higher than in most other countries of Europe. Nevertheless, the outlook for economic growth in Slovakia is rather gloomy as significant slowdowns in the economies of its major trading partners could continue to put a brake on exports – as already indicated by a drop in new industrial orders received in September.
ST taps innovative students
SLOVAK Telekom (ST), one of the main telecom service providers in Slovakia, held the seventh edition of its national student conference Telekom Day on November 10, at which students had the opportunity to get information about new developments in the telecommunications sector directly from ST experts. The topic of this year’s meeting was innovation, the company reported in a press release.
Samsung to stay in Slovakia
KOREAN firm Samsung will keep its production facility in Slovakia, the head of the company’s Electronics Division, Boo-Keun Yoon, promised Slovak Labour Minister Jozef Mihál.
Jednofarebná
NEVER IN its history has Slovakia had a single-colour government (jednofarebná vláda). Vladimír Mečiar’s brownish Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) came closest to ruling alone in 1992, when it gained 74 out of 150 seats. Still, he needed the additional votes provided by the black Slovak National Party (SNS). When both parties split two years later, they were replaced by an interim cabinet made up of renegades from the old coalition, plus members of the Party of the Democratic Left (SDĽ) and the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH).
Health minister comes up with memorandum to avert doctors' protest
Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik has drawn up a memorandum proposal which he says should meet the demands of more than 2,000 Slovak hospital doctors who are currently due to leave their posts at the end of the month as part of a union-led protest, it was announced on Thursday, November 17.
Sulík: Opting out of eurozone not an option for SaS
The Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party supports the euro in that it represents a continuation of the European unification project, SaS leader Richard Sulík said on Thursday, November 17.
Cabinet ditches plan to alter funding of local authorities
Rules governing the distribution of tax revenues for local authorities will not change after all, after the cabinet withdrew a legislative proposal aimed at altering the pattern, the TASR newswire reported on Wednesday, November 16. The law has already passed its first reading in parliament; a final vote was expected to take place in late November.
Alleged ringleader of 'Piťovci' gang remains in custody
Juraj Ondrejčák, also known as Piťo, a Bratislava resident who was arrested at his home on November 15 and is alleged to be the ringleader of Bratislava's largest organised crime gang, the 'Piťovci', was remanded in custody following a decision by the District Court in Trnava on Thursday, November 17, the TASR newswire reported.
Cabinet drops proposal to appoint Krnáč as head of NBÚ
The cabinet has withdrawn its proposal to appoint Kamil Krnáč (an MP for Freedom and Solidarity (SaS)) as director of the National Security Authority (NBÚ), after parliament dropped the proposal in October.
Governing parties agree 2012 state budget
All four governing parties reached an agreement on the 2012 state budget proposal on Wednesday, November 16, setting the upper limit for the state deficit as 4.6 percent of GDP. They also agreed that if the upper limit were later to be reduced, this would require the unanimous agreement of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and Most-Híd.
Statistics Office: Inflation at 3.5 percent in October
Slovakia’s average annual inflation rate was 3.5 percent in October, the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced on Wednesday, November 16. The indicator grew by 0.3 percentage points on a monthly basis.
Matovič woos Hlina to join Ordinary People slate
Neither the leader of the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities party Igor Matovič nor civic activist Alojz Hlina were able to confirm Wednesday, November 16, whether Hlina would run for parliament on the party’s slate for the March 2012 general election, the TASR newswire reported on Wednesday.
Number of unemployment-benefit recipients fell in October
The number of people receiving unemployment benefit was 40,800 in October, a decline of 400 from September. On an annual basis, the number of beneficiaries rose by 3,300 in October, according to figures released by the social security provider Sociálna Poisťovňa (SP).

EU to send protest note to Ethiopia following diplomatic incident
The EU’s foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, assured Slovakia’s foreign minister, Mikuláš Dzurinda, at a meeting of European Union foreign ministers' in Brussels on Monday, November 14, that a protest note would be sent to Ethiopia after Slovak Ambassador to Ethiopia Milan Dubček was detained by the authorities there for two days in early November.
Former coalition partners seek accord on state budget Wednesday
The former partners in Slovakia's ruling coalition, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Híd, are meeting on Wednesday, November 16, to seek agreement on the draft 2012 state budget.
Poll: Smer could govern alone
If parliamentary elections had been held in November, current opposition party Smer would have receive 45.2 percent of the votes, according to a poll conducted by the Focus polling agency. As a result, the party would not need to find any other coalition partners as it would take 79 parliamentary seats out of a total of 150, thus securing an outright majority. The poll took place between November 3 and November 8 and involved 1,041 respondents, the TASR newswire reported.
Economic growth slowed in Q3, says Statistics Office
A flash assessment of economic growth in Slovakia in the third quarter of 2011 showed that it slowed by 2.9 percentage points compared to the same period in 2010, the Statistics Office reported on its website.
