The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) will not support the proposal of Economy Minister Juraj Miškov to dismiss Anna Bubeníková as the chair of the National Property Fund (FNM), saying the proposal is based on ill-founded accusations, the Sme daily reported.
Brussels investigates apparent loss of payroll taxes paid to Slovakia by the EC
Funds sent by the European Commission as payroll taxes for the Slovak employees working for the European Union between the years 1999 and 2003 have reportedly been lost. Though about €0.5 million arrived on the Slovak accounts, they were not received by the social insurer Sociálna poisťovňa, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported.
Jan 20 deadline for absentee ballots
THOUSANDS of Slovaks living abroad have less than two weeks to take action if they want to vote in the March parliamentary elections. Slovaks living abroad must submit a request to the municipal office in their town of permanent residence or, if they have no Slovak address, to Bratislava’s Petržalka district office by January 20 if they want a ballot for the March 10 election, the Sme daily reported.
Online advertising still growing in Slovakia
INTERNET-based advertising continued to grow last year but forecasts of a coming economic crisis may negatively affect how much advertisers are willing to spend in 2012. Other factors that are expected to impact Slovakia’s online advertising market are the growing popularity of advertising on social networks and the potential for advertising on tablets and other mobile devices, a development which is just coming to the country. Experts contend that Slovak companies are not yet fully using the potential offered by online advertising and add that younger internet users view ads and media differently than their elders and for that reason online ad campaigns must be more focused to bring the results desired by advertisers.
State deficit falls 26 percent in 2011
REGARDLESS of the composition of the government that emerges following the general election in March, Slovakia’s political leaders will have few other options but to continue fiscal consolidation if they want to preserve the country’s credibility, market watchers as well as politicians themselves seem to agree.
Slovak sports channel could return
THE THIRD channel offered by public-service Slovak television, known as Trojka, ceased broadcasting on June 30 last year. The decision to halt the all-sports channel, which was launched just prior to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, was solely financial, according to Ľuboš Machaj, programme director of the merged public-service broadcaster Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), which was created in January 2011, the SITA newswire reported.

The president’s speech
ONCE or twice a year, a head of state is expected to address the nation, ideally to provide vision, some sort of guidance, or even inspiration. Without doubt, only a head of state regarded as having moral authority can make history through a single speech. Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič will never make history with one of his speeches and most of the nation knows it by now.
Danish EU Presidency begins
IT IS ALMOST a habit for the incoming EU Presidency to announce that it is taking over the office at a historic moment. I hardly risk being accused of exaggerating if I say that this is indeed the case this time for the Danish EU Presidency.

DO YOU think fish cannot fly? Ladislav Guderna, the world-renown surrealistic painter of Slovak origin, might persuade you to the contrary when you visit the Bratislava City Gallery’s exhibition of the artist’s oeuvre called Flying Fish, the Magical World of Ladislav Guderna.

Slovak Post helps Baby Jesus with Christmas wishes
CHILDREN in Slovakia traditionally receive Christmas presents brought by Baby Jesus (Ježiško) rather than by Santa Claus, so many youngsters address their pre-Christmas letters to Ježiško. Slovak Post (Slovenská Pošta) makes it possible for children to address their handwritten letters to ‘999 99 Ježiško’ and children who provide a return address and stamp even receive a personal response.

Gorila
SLOVAKIA is not the natural habitat of gorillas. But don’t be fooled by the code name Gorila (Gorilla) on the alleged spy-file: corruption is definitely nothing imported.

THE AMOUNT that a person can be fined for insulting a public official will not be increased, as the relevant paragraphs in a draft amendment to the law on misdemeanours prepared by the Interior Ministry will not be included when the amendment is forwarded to parliament for action, the TASR newswire reported.
Elections to dominate political agenda in 2012
SERIOUS economic challenges that will call for compromises and agreements between Slovak political parties, European Union efforts to coordinate national fiscal policies that will affect individual member states, and the outcome of Slovakia’s early parliamentary elections in March: these will be the major political issues in 2012, according to political analysts interviewed by The Slovak Spectator.
