Tatranská Lomnica offers retro skiing competition
THE SO-CALLED Javorová cesta (Amber Route) on the Buková hora (Beech Tree) ski slope in Tatranská Lomnica was full of oddly-clad skiers on March 3 when winter sports enthusiasts tried retro skiing on wooden boards without modern amenities and worst of all – without ski lifts.

Rusko rejects charges
THE INVESTIGATION into the Gorilla file, an unverified leaked file which implies high-level political corruption in Slovakia in 2005-06, has now led, albeit indirectly, to criminal charges – and denials. Pavol Rusko, a former economy minister, now stands accused of fraud in association with the 2004 privatisation of Bratislava-based electricity generator Steam-Gas Cycle (PPC). He has said he will file a complaint against the charges.
Picking the new/old team
THE FIRST group shot of the new government will probably provide some answers to those people who have been hoping to witness Robert Fico’s metamorphosis into a reasonable politician. Given the huge power he has been handed, the majority of Slovakia’s electorate must hope or believe that Fico knows what he is doing and with whom he is going to do it. Now the political dance-floor completely belongs to his Smer ensemble, plus perhaps anyone who will join them for this four-year waltz. The opposition will occasionally play a supporting role – or the opposite, by trying to whistle over the music they do not like.

ŠTEFAN Potocký, a resident of Kalná nad Hronom in Nitra Region, has filed a criminal complaint with the Office of the General Prosecutor alleging that the police misused their authority when dealing with the Gorilla Protest in Bratislava on March 9, the TASR newswire reported.
Bank to help Komárno shipyard
THE STATE-RUN Eximbanka, which provides support for exports and imports by Slovak companies, will provide help to Slovak Shipyards Komárno in Nitra Region according to a government decision taken on March 21. Eximbanka, possibly with the help of commercial banks, is set to fund the construction of three ships at the shipyard this year and another three or four in 2013, the TASR newswire wrote.

Western SLOVAKIA
Improving the status of women in business
THE EUROPEAN Union has been working on a plan to pave the way for more women to take managerial positions in top companies Europe-wide, since only 13.7 percent of top managers sitting on the boards of firms in 2011 were women. Compared to 2010 the number rose only slightly, by just 1.9 percent, despite an appeal by Viviane Reding, the European Union's Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship. Last year Reding called on companies to sign a pledge to increase the number of women in top positions, but the initiative has so far been joined only by 24 companies.
Army project in trouble
PROBLEMS plaguing the new mobile communication system for the armed forces, on which the state has already spent around €200 million, can only be resolved by spending several million more euros, said Prime Minister Iveta Radičová on March 22. She was speaking in her role as acting head of the Defence Ministry about MOKYS, the subject of a much-publicised procurement contract with British defence giant BAE Systems.

ENTERPRISES today are grappling with an array of security issues brought about by changing attitudes and work habits among their employees as well as the dynamics of a more collaborative, connected and mobile world. Enterprises must continue to protect against a wide range of potent threats from cybercriminals, who are currently reaping success as well as investing additional resources in refining advanced threats to cyber security.
