Slovak firm spans the world – except Slovakia
GROWING up behind the Iron Curtain, Ľuboš Fellner, now 43, chose to go to medical school because it was the area least influenced by communist ideology. But shortly after he graduated, the revolution of 1989 tore down the Iron Curtain and his adventurous spirit led him to discover what was beyond Czechoslovakia’s previously sealed borders – and to enable others to do the same.
The future we want
TWENTY years ago, there was the Earth Summit. Gathering in Rio de Janiero, world leaders agreed on an ambitious blueprint for a more secure future. They sought to balance the imperatives of robust economic growth and the needs of a growing population against the ecological necessity to conserve our planet’s most precious resources — land, air and water. And they agreed that the only way to do this was to break with the old economic model and invent a new one. They called it sustainable development.

The logger from Terchová
FOR LOGGING to be a traditional job handed down from one generation to the next requires a vast forested area and good rivers on which to transport timber. Many parts of Slovakia fulfil these conditions but it has been the region around the Váh River from Trenčín north, the Hron region, the area of the Slovenské rudohorie mountains, and the region of northern Šariš and Zemplín that have been considered the best for logging.

Italy to offer air show, and much more
A CELEBRATION of Italian culture in Slovakia occurs every year during the Dolce Vitaj festival that runs for the entire month of June, but the influence of Italian culture in Slovakia is much wider and can be felt in many more ways – from a good Italian-style coffee through the use of Italian terminology and language in classical music and many operas, to cult movies and Italian architecture and fashion.
Poprad inspired by Italian initiative
POPRAD, a city in the foothills of the High Tatras, is combating the outflow of people from its centre into shopping malls recently built on the outskirts. Seventy shops, restaurants and other facilities, inspired by the Italian Pro Loco scheme, have joined together to create the Pre Mesto (For the City) association to draw people back into the city centre, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote in May. The emptying of the city centre has hit almost all facilities there.

Tolerance or equal rights?
INTOLERANCE can reveal itself in multiple forms, from controlled antipathy through hate speech to physical aggression. But sometimes expressions of intolerance appear in the guise of “personal opinion” which all individuals believe they are entitled to. Racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, homophobia, sexism, and ageism are not just entries in reports about abuse of human rights, with some alarming numbers attached, but also cause widespread personal suffering even in 21st-century societies that claim to respect universal human rights, which no longer assassinate political opponents, and which do not send their citizens to gas chambers.

Self-employed face payroll tax hike

Unequal education for Roma pupils
A SPECIAL class for children coming from a Roma community or even a separate school building that only has classrooms for Roma students: these are two very specific examples of what international human rights organisations call segregated education in Slovakia, a problem that they charge faces Roma children seeking a public education in many parts of the country.
