Bratislava tests new tram
A NEW tram made by the Bombardier company of Canada has gone on trial service in Bratislava. The city is getting the five-unit tram for free because the manufacturer wants to test how Bratislava residents and visitors view it. Passengers can ride the new tram without a ticket.
“Our City” seeks to break record
ONCE again volunteers from companies and residents of 11 cities in Slovakia will help non-profit organisations, various kinds of civic associations and charitable facilities under the banner of Naše Mesto (Our City) on June 15 and 16, the Pontis Foundation informed in a press release.The organisers, the Pontis Foundation and Engage, aim to break last year’s record participation and have set a goal of more than 5,000 volunteers in what it calls the biggest volunteering event in central Europe.
Slovak Telekom lets its employees nominate worthy projects
Slovak Telekom’s programme called Pomáhame komunite (We Help the Community) was created in 2004 as the first grant programme in which employees could nominate a nonprofit organisation which they know or in which they personally participate to receive grants from the telecommunications provider. The idea received a great response from employees as each could recommend a specific project of a non-profit organisation and ask for grant assistance. Slovak Telekom has now completed eight successful years of its Pomáhame komunite programme.

Foreign Ministry to change name and get enhanced powers
Slovakia's Foreign Affairs Ministry is to be re-named as of September 1, 2012, following an amendment to the General Administration Act that the government approved on Thursday, May 31. From September it will be known as the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry, highlighting its responsibilities for European policies.
Tax freedom day in Slovakia falls on June 1 this year
Tax freedom day, the first day in a given year on which people have earned enough to fund the state's annual tax demands, will fall on June 1 this year in Slovakia, according to an analysis released by the Association of Slovak Taxpayers and the F. A. Hayek Foundation on Thursday, May 31. Tax freedom day in 2011 fell on June 3, the TASR newswire wrote.
USA wants Slovak special forces to stay longer in Afghanistan
The United States would welcome it if the Slovak Parliament extended the mandate of the Slovak special forces active in the ISAF operation in Afghanistan, American Ambassador to Slovakia Theodore Sedgwick said during a meeting with Defence Minister Martin Glváč on Thursday, May 31.
ÚPN releases names of communist secret agents from eastern Slovakia
The Nation's Memory Institute (ÚPN) on Thursday, May 31, announced that it had published the names of communist secret service (ŠtB) officials and agents in eastern Slovakia, which was known as a bastion of hard-core communists after the Warsaw Pact invasion crushed liberalisation attempts in Czechoslovakia in 1968.
