Survey: Slovaks spend €144 per month on entertainment in summer
The average Slovak spends €144 per month on entertainment in the summer, which is twice as much as at other times of the year, a Prima Bank survey released on Wednesday, August 15 has revealed.
€630 million is missing from budget to narrow gap to 2.9% of GDP
The Finance Ministry is set to submit another set of consolidation measures in the upcoming few weeks designed to bring an extra €630 million to the state coffers, the ministry's State Secretary Peter Pellegrini told a press conference on Wednesday, August 15. These funds are needed to squeeze next year's fiscal gap to 2.9 percent of GDP, which is necessary for Slovakia's compliance with the EU's Stability and Growth Pact.
Slovakia's harmonised inflation accelerated to 3.8 percent in July
The growth rate of consumer prices in Slovakia slightly accelerated in July. Inflation measured by the EU harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) achieved a 3.8 percent year-on-year increase over July, while a month ago it was at 3.7 percent. According to the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ), the average twelve-month inflation rate remained at 4.1 percent in July.
Petition in support of second pillar needs 10,000 more signatures
The opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party expects that its petition in support of the second private pension pillar, which has hitherto been signed by approximately 90,000 people, will be ready to be submitted to parliament by the beginning of September, said MP Ľudovít Kaník, chairman of SDKÚ's caucus.

Slovakia’s economy grew at 2.7 percent
SLOVAKIA’S economy continued growing in the second quarter of 2012, a time when some of the European giants either stagnated or grew at a rate slower than one percent. The country’s economy grew at a rate of 2.7 percent year-on-year, a slight fall from the 3.0-percent growth recorded in the first quarter of 2012. The economy maintains a solid quarter-on-quarter growth at 0.7 percent, the country’s statistics authority reported in its flash estimate on August 14. The volume of GDP at current prices in the second quarter of 2012 reached €17,825 million, a 3.7 percent increase year-on-year, the Slovak Statistics Office said.
