Future generations need German
AXEL Hartmann sees a demand for German language education in Slovakia. However, the German ambassador to Slovakia is concerned about the impact the legislative change that made English language mandatory for elementary school children here might have on the ability of the next generation to speak German over the long-term. He notes that small and medium-sized companies operating in Slovakia will always need people who speak at least some German. Ambassador Hartmann, however, sees a positive new trend of German companies in Slovakia investing in research and development facilities here, which he says will increase the competitiveness of the Slovak economy.

Roma reform turns to justice
THE STATE should respond to the continuous criminal activities of people who receive social benefits, according to the authors of the Roma reform titled “The Right Way”, who have presented its second part, dedicated to law enforcement, the SITA newswire reported on November 16.
Trnka allegedly linked to murky case
POLICE are waiting to speak to Dobroslav Trnka, the former general prosecutor and current deputy prosecutor, over suspicions of abuse of power by a public official. In a letter acquired by the Sme daily, which was sent to one of the parties in a legal dispute over the Glance House apartment building in Bernolákovo, near Bratislava, Trnka consented to its transfer even though he is not entitled to issue such a decision by law.
The new youth unemployment projects
THE FIRST project will focus on creating jobs in the transport sector and at small and medium-sized enterprises. It is supposed to create up to 9,000 jobs, at a cost of nearly €50 million.
Behrens synagogue reconstructed
THE SYNAGOGUE in Žilina designed by prominent German architect Peter Behrens is being reconstructed and repurposed. The local Truc Sphérique civic association is turning it into an art gallery in a project that has already attracted attention from abroad.
Opera connects Haydn, capital and young singers
LA CANTERINA, a two-act opera written by a young Joseph Haydn, premiered in 1767 in the Archbishop’s Summer Palace (today’s Government Office residence) in Bratislava. It is also the earliest opera composed by Haydn – then aged 33 – to have been preserved.
Poet Rúfus has his memorial ceremonially unveiled under Poludnica
THE BURIAL site of Slovak poet Milan Rúfus at the cemetery in his native municipality of Závažná Poruba under the Poludnica hill now has a new memorial. One of the most important representatives of Slovak literature is commemorated by the words “Básnik mladosti, sĺz a našich ľúbostí” / “The Poet of Youth, Tears and Our Loving” on his tombstone.
Boór children can return to Slovakia
TWO SLOVAK boys who had been placed into foster care by social services in the United Kingdom can return to Slovakia to live with their grandmother, a British court has ruled. The verdict had been awaited by numerous Slovaks whose interest was stirred by coverage in Slovak media, which had characterised the boys’ case as a ‘forced adoption’.

THE BUSINESS environment in Slovakia worsened in the third quarter of 2012, the Business Alliance of Slovakia (PAS) reported.
Labsi claims financial compensation
ALGERIAN Mustafa Labsi, the alleged terrorist who was extradited from Slovakia back in 2010, has avoided the death penalty in his home country and has been released from prison. Labsi can now claim financial compensation from the Slovak courts, which dealt unsuccessfully with his demand to remain in Slovakia, based on the ruling passed by the European Court of Justice (ECHR), the TASR newswire reported on November 17.

WHEN Susan Kleebank carves out the top of a pumpkin on a November afternoon and removes the seeds and pulp inside, she is not doing it for Halloween. The ambassador of Brazil is actually preparing in her Bratislava kitchen a dish that comes from the coastal area of her homeland: a pumpkin stuffed with shrimp. When Kleebank explains that in the culinary paradise of Brazil each of the five regions has its own unique, traditional dishes, from grilled fish to feijoada (a pork and bean stew) to mandioca, one instantly understands that choosing one dish was not an easy task.
Brazilian recipes: Pumpkin stuffed with shrimp
Ingredients: one pumpkin, more or less 30 cm in diameter (small enough to fit inside a microwave); three tablespoons of olive oil; two medium onions, chopped; four cloves of garlic, minced; one teacup of tomato puree; 1kg of cleaned shrimp; 1/3 of a can of coconut milk; half tablespoon of salt; half tablespoon of ground black pepper; one cup of cream cheese; Tabasco sauce to taste; one tablespoon of chopped parsley.
Delphi employees to protest in front of plant in Senica
Employees of cable-bundle producer Delphi Slovakia were set to stage a protest in front of the plant in Senica (Trnava Region) at 6:00-7:00 on Friday, November 23, to express their discontent at planned mass layoffs and the company's plans to move away from Slovakia, the TASR newswire learnt.
Sme: Trnka did not deny involvement in murky property transfer case
Deputy general prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka remains part of the senior leadership team at the Office of the General Prosecutor (GPO) despite suspicions that he aided a fraud, the Sme daily wrote in its Friday, November 23, issue.
Man shoots dead three former associates in Zvolen
An unresolved financial dispute was reported to be the most likely reason why a 56-year-old man shot dead three of his former associates at a company headquarters in the central Slovak town of Zvolen (Banská Bystrica Region) on Thursday, November 22.
