SMK collects signatures calling for bilingual election information
The Party of Hungarian Community (SMK) plans to propose changes to the Act on Civil Procedure and the Act on Franchise Conditions to accommodate bilingual election information and intends to collect the necessary 500 signatures to initiate such amendments. It announced on July 25 that if it succeeds in its endeavour, the Interior Ministry will have to consider the proposals.
Slota appeals against his expulsion from SNS, party insists it was valid
The long-time former leader of the Slovak National Party (SNS), Ján Slota, was expelled from the party conclusively and lawfully, party spokesperson Zuzana Kohútková said on July 25, as quoted by the TASR newswire, in response to reports that Slota is appealing against his exclusion.
Poll: Fico and Kiska would make it to second round run-off in presidential election
Current Prime Minister Robert Fico and independent civic candidate Andrej Kiska would make it to the second round run-off in a presidential election, a public opinion poll by the Focus agency, published on July 25 suggests.
Slovak soldier’s murderer is celebrated as hero in Taliban video
The murder of a Slovak soldier, deployed in Afghanistan as part of the ISAF mission, has been hailed in a video placed on the internet by local Taliban Islamic extremists. The Nový Čas daily reported that the video shows Lambar Khan, who shot dead Daniel Kavuliak, a 35-year-old sergeant-major, and injured six other Slovak service personnel, two of them seriously, on July 9 at a military base in Kandahar. Khan was a regular soldier in the Afghan National Army (ANA). Several days after the attack he escaped detention and is now hiding in territory controlled by the Taliban.
Police: Leopoldov bank robbers were professional soldiers
Only a few days after masked robbers raided a bank in Leopoldov, police have announced that they have been arrested and serving soldiers in the Slovak Army. The robbers were named as Peter from Sereď (aged 29) and Miroslav from Kostoľany nad Hornádom in the Košice district (aged 23).
Čižnár gives first press conference, Trnka and Tichý step down
Slovakia’s recently appointed general prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár set out his priorities, planned steps and future changes on July 25, at his first meeting with journalists. “Staff changes at top positions in the General Prosecutor’s Office are not easy,” he said, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
EC: Slovakia dragging its heels on unified EU road toll plan
The European Commission is planning to unify road toll payments for all EU countries with a single toll-payment device, which would be valid for all countries involved, as well as a single invoice. Member states have already taken steps to implement the plan, the Sme daily wrote in its Thursday, July 25 issue.
Fires reported in Nitra Region, High Tatras
The road connecting the village of Cabaj with Trnovec nad Váhom in the Nitra Region has been closed due to a fire in the fields near the village of Močenok, Nitra Firefighter and Rescue Corps spokesman Viliam Pánsky told the TASR newswire on Wednesday, July 24.
Slovak development aid declined in 2012
The volume of official development aid in 2012 decreased by almost €1 million in annual terms, with the overall sum spent last year standing at €60.98 million, according to data released by the Slovak Non-governmental Development Organisations (MVRO) Platform. The 2012 figure represents 0.087 percent of the country's GNI (gross national income).
Labour Ministry: Child benefits revoked only for serious violations
The Labour, Social Affairs and Family Ministry drafted an amendment to the Child Benefits Act that introduces more stringent conditions for receiving child benefits. The amendment’s proposal to withhold child benefits from parents of children who behave poorly in school provoked a wave of criticism.
New chief prosecutor embarks on changes
THESE are no clean-ups, commented Jaromír Čižnár, whom President Ivan Gašparovič appointed as Slovakia’s general prosecutor on July 17, in reference to changes to the top management of the Office of General Prosecutor that he began to make after just five days in the job. Čižnár’s predecessor, Dobroslav Trnka, will become a rank-and-file prosecutor, handing his current role as deputy general prosecutor to Peter Šufliarsky, who will fill the role on an interim basis until a competitive selection process leads to a permanent appointment.

Even though agriculture in Slovakia still ended up in the black in 2012, with a recorded profit of €48.7 million before tax, the figure amounts to a year-on-year drop of 33.8 percent compared to 2011’s profits of €73.6 million.
Čaplovič in Poland to negotiate joint candidacy for Winter Olympics
The head of the Education, Science, Research and Sports Ministry, Dušan Čaplovič, embarked on a two-day visit to Poland on Wednesday, July 24. His schedule includes negotiations with the president of the Polish Olympic Committee, Andrzej Kraśnicki, about the preparation phase of the joint candidacy for the Winter Olympics Krakow 2022. Čaplovič also plans to hold talks with the Polish Minister of Sport and Tourism, Joanna Mucha, and the Minister of Science and Higher Education, Barbara Kudrycka.

Every employed Slovak contributes almost €2,000 to the health-care system annually, the Health Insurers Association (ZZP) informed the TASR newswire.
108 people fainted in Tuesday's extreme heat
Excessively high temperatures on Tuesday, July 24, in Slovakia caused 108 people to faint, which was, however, 32 people fewer than on Monday, Boris Chmel of the Operational Centre of the Slovak Medical Rescue Service told the TASR newswire.
Sme: Čentéš rejects offer from Čižnár
Jozef Čentéš, Slovakia's elected but unappointed candidate for the post of general prosecutor, has reportedly rejected an offer from Jaromír Čižnár, the man instead appointed by the president to do the job, to become his deputy. Čentéš declined to comment on the issue, the Sme daily reported on July 24.
Soldiers could not have prevented injuries, the investigation shows
The Slovak army unit attacked by an Afghan soldier at the beginning of July in Kandahar could not have prevented the shooting, during which one man died and another six were injured. Such were the preliminary results of an inspection carried out by a commission in Afghanistan appointed by the head of the General Staff of the Slovak Armed Forces. The inspection also showed that no security rules were violated, the SITA newswire reported on July 23.
Ruda sentenced to 13 years in prison
A Slovak court has delivered the first definitive verdict in the case of misuse of money which should have been used to hold the 17th Winter Deaflympics in February 2011. The appellate senate of the Banská Bystrica Regional Court found Jaromír Ruda, the former head of the Slovak Deaflympic Committee, guilty of fraud and sentenced him to 13 years in prison, the SITA newswire reported on July 23.
VW will not make Bentley SUV in Slovakia
Slovakia has lost in its bid for a new investment by carmaker Volkswagen. The German firm announced on July 23 that it will produce the new luxury Bentley EXF9 SUV – informally branded 'Falcon' – in the British town of Crewe, the Sme daily reported.
