Japanese firm Akebono closer to opening Trenčín plant
Trenčín town councillors, on Monday, July 22 approved automotive industry supplier Akebono Brake Industry’s proposal to buy state land, thereby bringing the Japanese manufacturer one step closer to setting up shop at the industrial park in Trenčín.
Public debt close to hitting 55 percent
Slovakia’s debt ratcheted up to 54.9 percent of GDP in the first quarter of 2013, up from 52.1 percent in the first quarter of 2012.
TIS: New website casts light on Slovak judiciary
A new website, otvorenésúdy.sk, was created to provide the Slovak public with information on the quality of judicial rulings and the length of cases, Transparency International Slovensko (TIS) informed. From Tuesday, July 23 on, citizens can follow detailed information on rulings, trials, property returns and sanctions for more than 1,700 Slovak judges through the website.
MVK poll: PM Fico most trusted politician in Slovakia
Prime Minister Robert Fico still tops the polls when it comes to people's confidence in politicians, according to the latest survey carried out by the MVK polling agency on a representative sample of 1,077 respondents between July 2 and 8.
Unemployment fell slightly in June
The unemployment rate in Slovakia stood at 14.25 percent in June, representing a drop of 0.01 percentage points in monthly terms, but a rise of 0.91 percentage points on an annual basis, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (ÚPSVaR) announced on Monday, July 22.
IVO: Quality of democracy slipped to 2.9 grade in first half of 2013
The quality of democracy in Slovakia was given a grade of 2.9 in the first half of this year, amounting to a year-on-year drop of 0.1 percentage point, according to the IVO Barometer survey carried out by the Public Affairs Institute (IVO). The survey, released Monday, July 22 periodically assesses the quality of democracy in Slovakia in selected key spheres, with 1 being the best grade and 5 the worst.
Johnson Controls in Lučenec to receive €4.1 million from state
The US company Johnson Controls Innotec Technologies will receive investment assistance worth €4.1 million for expanding its production site in Lučenec (Banská Bystrica Region), according to a proposal submitted by the Economy Ministry for inter-ministerial comments.

Six Roma families from the municipality of Rankovce near Košice (in eastern Slovakia) are building their own houses using their own savings and money from so-called micro-loans.
Sagan defends green jersey
Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan achieved his goal for this year’s Tour de France race when he secured his second successive green jersey after the final race on July 21.
State to sell Slovak Telekom
The government of Robert Fico is preparing one of the biggest state sales since its appointment in April 2012. The Economy Ministry has already launched negotiations with German company Deutsche Telekom over selling the state’s minority share in its subsidiary, Slovak Telekom, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on July 19.
Skanska and Strabag challenge exclusion from highway tender
Construction companies Skanska and Strabag submitted their complaint over their exclusion from public competition for construction of the cross-country D1 highway section Lietavská Lúčka - Višňové - Dubná Skala to the Public Procurement Office (ÚVO). They consider it an error, saying that the National Highway Company (NDS) had originally accepted their offer, the SITA newswire reported.
New law to require demolition of illegal buildings; Interior Ministry seeks exemption for Roma
The Transport Ministry has prepared new, stricter rules to make demolition of illegal buildings easier. The new Construction Act will allow authorities to stop all work on buildings lacking the necessary permits, and punish those who refuse to halt such work with imprisonment for up to five years. The Interior Ministry will require an exemption for Roma, the Sme daily reported on July 20.
Ftáčnik and Dvonč not penalised for holding illegal posts
Mayors of two Slovak towns who were illegally sitting on the supervisory board of private insurance company Komunálna Poisťovňa, will not be punished. The control commission of the Association of Towns and Villages of Slovakia (ZMOS) will investigate Nitra mayor Jozef Dvonč, who also chairs ZMOS, and Bratislava mayor Milan Ftáčnik, saying they did not violate the statute of the association, the Sme daily reported on July 22.
Čižnár will allegedly not keep Tichý and Trnka in top prosecutor’s posts
Recently appointed general prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár allegedly does not want former general prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka and current deputy general prosecutor Dobroslav Trnka to serve in their current top posts at the General Prosecutor’s Office, the Sme daily reported on July 20.

Routing of oil pipeline stirs calm summer waters
EVEN THOUGH the Slovak Economy Ministry calls the construction of a crude oil pipeline linking Slovak and Austrian refineries a strategic project, Bratislava and its citizens oppose the plan, fearing possible negative impacts on the environment and their health. Public opposition to the pipeline has nearly halted preparation of the Bratislava Higher Regional Unit’s (VÚC) master plan, with the pipeline’s route remaining the core problem.

Rare mini-kangaroo born in Bojnice Zoo
The BOJNICE Zoo, Slovakia’s oldest, recently witnessed its first Parma wallaby birth. The Environment Ministry, which oversees the zoo, announced the birth to the media.
