Foreign committee condemns Russia on Ukraine
THE PARLIAMENTARY foreign committee has issued a statement condemning the violations of international law by Russia against the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine on March 13. At the same time it expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people and government, the TASR newswire reported.
V4 ministers: Region to be most affected by sanctions against Russia
POTENTIAL economic sanctions against Russia due to developments in Ukraine would have the most adverse affects on the Visegrad Group (V4) region (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia), the foreign affairs ministers of the group said, after meeting with their German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Budapest on March 13.
Slovakia gets more gas from Germany
SLOVAKIA has increased the imports of natural gas from Germany through the Czech Republic in order to get some reserves in a case Russia stops the deliveries. Withdrawing gas from Slovak reservoirs decreased last week, and it even stopped during the previous weekend, according to Gas Storage Europe utility.
Žarnay files criminal complaint over property manipulation
OTO ŽARNAY, former teacher of the Business Academy in Polárna Street in Košice, and Ján Mičovský of Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) have filed a criminal complaint over allegations of wasteful spending at a Košice school.
Probe in Nitra could have been faster
THE CONDUCT of police officers investigating an alleged neo-Nazi attack in front of the Mariatchi bar in downtown Nitra was proper, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák told the parliamentary defence and security committee March 13. The investigation was slower than ideal, but no specific police officer could be blamed for this situation, he said.
Employment, monthly salaries rise in most sectors in January
THE EMPLOYMENT in selected industries rose in January 2014 compared to the previous year. In information and communication technologies it rose by 4.3 percent, in selected market services by 1.9 percent, in industry by 1.1 percent, in transporting and warehousing by 0.9 percent and in accommodation by 0.2 percent, the Statistics Office reported on March 13.

V4 calls for US shale gas imports
SLOVAKIA has bitter memories of 2009, when a dispute between Russia and Ukraine temporarily halted the gas flow and brought some of the country’s business giants to a shuddering halt. After 13 days supplies were restored, but the incident renewed fears of dependence on Russia. The occupation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula has reignited similar energy security fears.
Industrial output January grew 13 percent
Industry in Slovakia continues to enjoy double-digit growth rate. Following anadjustment for the number of working days, its output in January increased by 12.9 percent year-on-year which exceeded its growth from December by 0.2 percentage points.
Bratislava Old Town against selling building to US Embassy
In an open letter, Bratislava Old Town’s Mayor Tatiana Rosová has asked Culture Minister Marek Maďarič in an open letter to abandon the idea of selling the building in Hviezdoslav Square now housing the US Embassy.

Enel: Slovak nuclear power plants operating at near full capacity
The Italian energy group Enel – that owns also the Slovak Slovenské Elektrárne energy company sold a total of 295.5 TWh of electric power to its clients (213.2 TWh out of that abroad), which is 6.7 percent less than the year before. It also produced less energy last year. This was caused by smaller demand in Italy, France and the Pyrenean Peninsula, official said March 12.

WORKERS at the Slovak arm of the German car manufacturer Volkswagen are on the verge of a strike, with representatives of employees embroiled as contract negotiations have stalled.
Slovak and Czech weapon makers to cooperate on new radar
FIVE defence industry companies from Slovakia and the Czech Republic will launch cooperation on a project involving military radar and are due to sign a memorandum on cooperation March 13 in Pardubice, the TASR newswire reported.
Slovakia absorbed 52 percent of EU funds by end of February
IN THE current programming period 2007 to 2013, Slovakia has absorbed €6.061 billion from European Union funds until the end of February of this year, which is 52.17 percent of the total commitment of €11.619 billion.

SECONDARY school students would elect non-partisan candidate Andrej Kiska as president. This is the result of a new project launched by the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) called the 2014 Student Presidential Election, which took place at more than 50 secondary schools on Monday, March 10.
Krásna Hôrka castle repairs exceed €1.17 million
THE RECONSTRUCTION of the fire-damaged castle Krásna Hôrka, which is owned by the state Slovak National Museum, has cost more than €1.17 million as of the beginning of March 2014. The castle caught on fire back in March, 2012.
Core and net inflation recorded negative numbers in February
IN FEBRUARY 2014, year-on-year inflation reached -0.1 percent, while core inflation stood at 0.3 percent and net inflation amounted to 0.2 percent, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) informed on March 12.
