Slovakia and Ukraine sign memorandum on reverse gas flow (updated)
SLOVAK gas pipeline operator Eustream and Ukrainian operator Ukrtransgaz signed a memorandum of understanding on supplying gas from Slovakia to Ukraine on April 28 in Bratislava. José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, who is visiting Slovakia, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, European Commissioner for Inter-Institutional Relations and Administration Maroš Šefčovič, Slovak Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský and Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuri Prodan attended the signing of the memorandum.
Slovakia will supply Ukraine with gas
SLOVAKIA has definitively decided to supply gas to Ukraine. The memorandum on the reverse gas flow from Slovakia to Ukraine is to be signed on April 28 in Bratislava.

Austrians buy Slovak foil producer
AUSTRIAN company Schur Flexibles Group has acquired Moneta-S, a Trebišov-based manufacturer of flexible packaging, the Hospodárske Noviny economic daily reported on April 1. This world leader in innovative packaging solutions from Slovakia supplies about 50 companies across central and western Europe and Russia, including Mondelez in Switzerland and Kraft Foods. The Austrian company’s motivation to buy the Slovak firm was to obtain the technologies of Moneta-S and to penetrate eastern markets.
Supreme Court receives Kukučová’s appeal, suspected of killing her British ex
THE CASE of swimsuit model Mária Kukučová, who is being charged with murdering her British former boyfriend and millionaire Andrew Bush, aged 48, in Spain, will go to the Supreme Court.

Austrians interested in Slovakia
THE POPULARITY of Slovakia among Austrians as a tourist destination is growing. The number of visitors to Slovakia’s accommodation facilities from Austria increased from 50,000 in 2009 to 66,000 in 2013, the TASR newswire reported.
Sustaining business ties
ONCE separated by the ironclad Iron Curtain, since its fall Austria and Slovakia have resumed fruitful economic cooperation. During the 25 years some 2,500 companies in Slovakia have tapped Austrian capital to grow, employing more than 40,000 people. Total foreign direct investments from Austria in Slovakia amount to €6 billion, making it the second biggest foreign investor in Slovakia. For Slovakia, Austria is its fourth most important export partner.
Slovak Telekom sale on horizon
THE SLOVAK government has made another step toward the sale of a minority stake in Slovak Telekom (ST). On April 23 it approved an amendment to the privatisation act extending the means for the sale of state assets to include the stock exchange. The new legislation still needs approval by the full parliament, which is expected.
Offering vocational experience
MARKUS Wuketich believes that there can be no real reconciliation without coming to terms with the painful chapters of one’s own past. The Austrian ambassador to Slovakia also notes that younger generations are not that familiar with the period when Europe was artificially divided by the Iron Curtain, adding that, nevertheless, preserving peace and stability requires continuous hard work.The Slovak Spectator spoke to Wuketich about Austria’s experience with dual vocational training and how it could inspire Slovakia to address its own education sector woes, as well as the challenges of the labour market, cooperation with the Visegrad Four group and the status of German in Slovakia.
Robber left bank empty handed, nabbed by police hours later
A would-be bank robber, who tried – and failed – to rob a bank in Malacky in western Slovakia on April 4 was caught a mere two hours later. The man identified only as Rudolf, 49, of Malacky, already faces charges of robbery. On that day at approximately 13:45, Rudolf entered the bank, drew a knife on the clerks and demanded cash.
Central Europe sees new security threat
NATO and its member states, including Slovakia, need to change their strategic thinking and military planning in the wake of the Ukraine crisis, says analyst Róbert Ondrejcsák, director of the non-governmental think tank Centre for European and North Atlantic Affairs (CENAA), who served as state secretary of the Defence Ministry during the Iveta Radičová government (2010-12).
Baird talks about Ukraine
MOSCOW is facing ever greater isolation from the international community, and if it continues its provocative steps it can expect further sanctions, Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird said on April 23 during his visit to Slovakia. According to him, Canada is concerned about Russian actions in Ukraine and the illegal occupation of Crimea.

BRATISLAVA “Rag Day”, or Bratislavský Majáles, has become a much-anticipated e-vent to mark May Day. The first weekend of May will offer a host of events, including concerts, events for children, discussions, gastronomy, a Danube ship cruise, a fireworks display, a bicycle ride around Bratislava Region, a handmade design market, a debate on Europe, a travelling photo exhibition and more.

THE SLOVAK Philharmonic offered several concerts to mark Easter this year, and one of them was a symphonic/vocal cycle that combined Joseph Haydn’s Mourning Symphony in E-Minor and Gioacchino Rossini’s Stabat Mater.
