THE PRIVATISATION of the Slovak power utility Slovenské elektrárne (SE) is about to enter a new phase in early March.Five bidders selected by the Slovak government will begin due diligence investigations for 21 out of 30 SE facilities. Versatile, but a bluesman at heart

NOT HAVING the patience to take formal lessons, he taught himself the guitar by listening to and observing other musicians. At the age of 13 he held his first concert and in the 1990s his songs helped to revitalise the country blues tradition. He has also directed and starred in several off-Broadway musicals.Above all, though, musician, composer, actor, director, and writer Guy Davis has always been a bluesman.

Hard-won flowers

DISHEVELED, drunken toasting and compulsory card writing are the things Slovaks I've talked to most associate with International Women's Day (Medzinárodný Deň Žien), celebrated March 8, the day this issue hits the stands. Observed during communism, the day has a long and flowery history here.During the old regime, it was good etiquette for a husband to start celebrating the holiday at work, toasting his female colleagues (kolegyne). When he finally called it quits and returned to his wife (manželka), he was not always in the best of form.

Sticking to the rules

SLOVNAFT, the biggest refinery in Slovakia, is located just next door to the country's capital, Bratislava. As the production of chemicals has a significant impact on the environment of the city, the factory has to be more than watchful of environmental measures. Still, some studies have pointed to traffic as the major source of the pollution in Bratislava."Slovnaft's priority is to anticipate and forego ineligible and non-standard situations, issues, and accidents. Given the nature of Slovnaft's operations, such issues cannot be fully eliminated in advance," said Kristína Félová, the spokeswoman for Slovnaft.

Designing golf's future for everyone

THE SPORT of snobs or everyone's game? As golfing culture begins to put down roots in Slovakia, those with a hand in the sport are deciding what it will look like. One of those people is Branden Wilburn, a golf course and landscape architect from the United States with strong feelings about the game and its future in Slovakia. Real excitement fills his voice when he talks about designing, building, and then playing a course.
