Some want to take the Roma to school

UNLIKE the EU, which rebuked Eric van der Linden, its ambassador to Slovakia, for saying that Roma children should be educated in boarding schools, Roma leaders in Slovakia are embracing the idea.In a May 1 interview on Dutch television, van der Linden said: "It may sound simplistic, but we may have to, I'll say it in quotation marks, 'force' the Roma children to stay in some kind of boarding schools, from Monday morning until Friday afternoon, where they will be continuously subjected to the system of values that is dominant in our society."

Renowned artist Zmeták passes on

ONE of Slovakia's foremost modernist artists, painter and graphic artist Ernest Zmeták, passed away on May 13 at the age of 85 after battling a long-term disease.Zmeták, who was born in 1919 in the southern Slovak town of Nové Zámky, devoted his entire life to art.He studied the legacy of 14th century Italian painting in Budapest in the class of Vilmos Aba-Novák, and in Slovakia he joined the modernist movement of Ľudovít Fulla. As a graphic artist, Zmeták illustrated several books.

Slovakia represented at Cannes festival

To sell or not to sell SE?

ONLY several weeks before the deadline for final bids on the sale of a majority stake in the state-run Slovenské elektrárne (SE), Economy Minister Pavol Rusko implied that there might be some new solutions to the privatisation of the country's major power producer.So far two alternatives - the sale of a 66 percent share of all SE property and the sale of a 66 percent share of SE's non-nuclear facilities are being considered.

Philharmonic choir sings in Brno

THE SLOVAK Philharmonic Choir, led by Jan Rozehnal, will perform in the Czech town of Brno on May 27.The choir, along with the State Philharmonic Brno and foreign soloists - soprano Alexandra Coku, alto Bernarda Fink, tenor Marjan Trček, and bass Marcos Fink - will perform Requiem Op 89 by Antonín Dvořák under the baton of Czech conductor Petr Altrichter.
