Slovaks begin to discuss racial discrimination
THERE HAS BEEN some progress in the public perception of the Roma over the past 10 or 12 years. Issues that were once cloaked with silence are now being openly discussed as people are realising that there exist some urgent problems that concern all citizens just as much as they concern the Roma, said cabinet plenipotentiary for the Roma community, Klára Orgovánová, in an interview with The Slovak Spectator.
Young Slovak art in The Hague
FOLLOWING the enlargement of the European Union, The Hague, in the Netherlands, opened an exhibition of contemporary art entitled Breakthrough. Around 40 young artists from 10 countries will exhibit their works until August 29 at the Grote Kerk Church, the daily SME wrote.
HZDS deputy on trial
MP GABRIEL Karlin and the high-standing municipal official Milan Mráz, office head of the Banská Bystrica regional government, both of whom are charged with bribery, made their initial pleas in the first Slovak corruption court trial ever to include an active MP.The main court proceedings took place on July 8 in the Banská Bystrica District Court where both Karlin, an MP for the opposition party Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), and Mráz pleaded not guilty.
Janík reveals his jewels in Žilina
INTERNATIONALLY successful jeweller Peter Janík, from Kysucké Nové Mesto, is exhibiting his unique work in Žilina at the Československá obchodná banka and Piano Café on Kuzmányho Street until the end of July. Entitled the Fourth Dimension of the Jewel, the display maps the young artist's 12-year career.Janík first introduced the best of his life-long work at the end of last year in Berlin, Germany. The collection features his most successful prototype jewels, which have received prestigious international awards in the US, Japan, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and other places.

Topoľčianky gets new sculptures
A COLLECTION of new sculptures made from Bulgarian marble was permanently mounted in the castle park of the town of Topoľčianky near Zlaté Moravce. The sculptures are the work of artists who participated in the second International Sculpture Symposium Topoľčianky 2004, the daily Pravda reported."In the past there was the Ružbachy symposium and the Sculpture of Piešťany Parks project in Slovakia.
Furniture triggers the mind
FURNITURE artist Michal Moravčík, who won this year's Oskár Čepan Award for young Slovak artists on June 23, is exhibiting part of his work along with that of three other finalists of the competition organised by the Centre of Contemporary Art Foundation at Bratislava's Pálffy Palace until September 5.

Nitra hosts vintage cars
FANS of classic cars are in for a treat at the car show and driving contest to be held in Nitra between July 23 and 25. Organised by the Veteran Car Club of Nitra, this is the 13th year of the convention, and the fifth year for the simultaneous convention of three-wheelers.The event will start on Friday evening at 21:00, when the classic cars and motorbikes will gather in front of the Olympia Hotel before taking an evening drive around the town
Winton's bravery still inspires filmmakers
SLOVAK director Matej Mináč remains faithful to the story of Nicholas Winton from Great Britain, a man who helped save hundreds of Jewish children from Czechoslovakia before the second world war broke out. In cooperation with screenwriter Jiří Hubač he is working on another film based on this theme, the Czech newswire ČTK reported."So far it's called the English Rhapsody. It really is a free continuation [of the previous All My Loved Ones]," Mináč told ČTK. It will be a story of a child genius that, thanks to Winston, makes it to Britain.
