The secret life of continents

Sveta diely, Dlhé dielyPublished by: Slnko RecordsAvailable at: most record stores or internationally at www.tamizdat.org, Cost: Sk350 (€9)WHEN TWO continents collide the result is more than earthquakes and mountains. The moment they brush against one another, the lives of two separate landmasses join in a burst of exchange and evolution. Two worlds end and a new one is born.

Norway puts money where its mouth is

NORWAY's commitment to balancing regional disparities in Slovakia goes beyond talk. Over the next five years, the Scandinavian country will provide the financial support to help make it happen. The aid package is a part of a larger project [European Economic Area Financial Mechanism] designed to help Central and Eastern European countries bridge the economic and social gaps within their societies. On January 11, State Secretary Kim Traavik of the Norwegian Foreign Affairs Ministry and Slovak Vice-Chairman Pál Csáky signed a Memorandum of Understanding defining how the Norwegian Financial Mechanism will work.

Ski Window

WINTER has certainly arrived with significant snowfall and strong winds. The mountains of northern Slovakia are covered with 20 to 100 centimetres of new, wet snow, which makes for decent skiing. All marked ski trails in Slovakia are protected against avalanches but those wishing to ski off trail should consult with Ski Patrol about possible off-piste avalanche hazards in the High and Low Tatras. Skiing off trail in National Parks in Slovakia is also illegal.

Culture clash over SND

SOME intellectuals call the theatre a reflection of life, a chronicle we live, the past we should preserve, and the future we either hope for or try to avoid. One wonders what reflection of society intellectuals see when they look at the unfinished building that is the Slovak National Theatre (SND)?Although the ruling coalition decided that Economy Minister Pavol Rusko would no longer have an exclusive say over the future of the SND, Rusko seems reluctant to let his authority in the matter be downplayed, especially by the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH).

Radio project revived

THE INTERIOR Ministry's New Year's resolution is to finish replacing Slovakia's analogue radio communications system with a digital one by the end of 2005. The idea, initiated in 1997, is to improve radio range nationwide and offer law enforcement and emergency first-responders greater communications quality and security. But before Slovakia can catch up with the Czech Republic, which completed its replacement a few years ago, the ministry needs to find a new supplier of digital technology solutions.

The long road back to Slovakia

MY TRIP from the United States to Slovakia last month took me through five cities and lasted 36 hours. I had four flights: from Rochester, NY to New York City, to Reykjavik, to London and to Prague. From Prague, I travelled by car and then train to Bratislava. The night before I set off I stayed up until 4:00 packing, which left me tired and dazed. As the trip wore on, things got hazier. The airports, cars, buses, planes and lounges were like scenes from a never-ending series of dreams.
