Nuclear shift causes alarm

SLOVAKIA might change its energy policies if the Economy Ministry succeeds in revising a 1999 document outlining the country's energy strategy.Though the previous document is not old, the ministry claims that new developments on world markets require the preparation of an update. Behind the drive for a new 10-year strategy is the desire to prevent Slovakia's dependence on imported energy.

Bratislava hits world stage

SLOVAKIA will dominate the European map for two days in February thanks to the upcoming US-Russian presidential summit in Bratislava. Slovakia will have to foot the bill for this increased visibility, too.Security measures being taken to safeguard the visit of US President George Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin will cost Slovak taxpayers Sk205 million (€5.2 million).

Geometry sealed in glass

26s.jpg####photo: Courtesy of Komart Gallery## ARTIST Štěpán Pala presents his latest works in glass and on paper in an exhibition at the Komart Gallery in Bratislava.The 60-year-old Pala, currently living in Slovakia, moulds his sculptures using transparent glass of various shades. His highly original pieces have already made it onto the European visual arts scene.In both art forms presented at the exhibition, Pala explores the potential of space. The rational depiction of relations between individual lines and geometric shapes results in the creation of new spaces.

Fabric blueprinting - a Slovak tradition

THE COLLECTION of fabric blueprinting in the Spišské Museum in Levoča is definitely one of the most valuable in the museum's ethnographic textile collection.It was acquired mainly during the 1970s and 1980s. At that time women in the mountain villages of the Levočské hills still wore some of the traditional garments, like blue printed skirts and aprons.

Slovakia through Nordic eyes

THE Norwegian embassy opened its doors in Bratislava last year, signalling a growing mutual awareness between the Slovak Republic and Norway. Although bilateral trade is still relatively small Slovakia is becoming more visible in Norway, and Norwegian businesses are starting to invest in Slovakia. Norway's ambassador to Slovakia, Brit Lovseth, says that Norwegian businesses will certainly find suitable partners in Slovakia.

Theatre plans change hands

ECONOMY Minister Pavol Rusko will no longer monopolize the future of the unfinished Slovak National Theatre (SND) building. According to a decision made by the ruling coalition on January 11, Slovakia's Culture Minister Rudolf Chmel will share responsibility for the task.The decision came at the request of a group of 37 MPs, mainly from opposition parties, who initiated a special parliamentary session on the issue. The session is scheduled for January 18.

Slovak evenings at the Celtic cellar

VISITORS to the Slovak Pub in Bratislava know that every Wednesday they can join musicians performing Celtic music in its basement, Keltská pivnica. Every Tuesday they can also hear live traditional Slovak music there.Now, every Tuesday from 20:00 to 22:00, anyone interested can bring their own instrument and join the Banda band in playing traditional Slovak songs and melodies.
