Auto giants fight to hire

WHILE British car manufacturer MG Rover is facing a financial crisis, kept alive only by a Ł25 million (€36.7 million) subsidy from the British government; and while the German and French auto industries are struggling to keep from sinking, Slovakia is preparing for a huge expansion in its car manufacturing sector.

Honest portrait of Roma

AMERICAN photographer Michael Robinson-Chavez did not come to Slovakia to snap a few clichéd images of poor Roma - dirty children playing in trash, so common in much western media. Nor did he come to shoot propaganda material on the Slovak Roma and spread it around the world. Instead, he came to live with them for a couple of weeks and shoot what he saw.

Kyoto: A boom in the fumes market

THE FIGHT against global climate change reached the next level this February when the Kyoto Protocol came into effect. Under the international treaty, the European community agreed to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 8 percent below its 1990 levels starting in 2008. One of the elements of the EU's combat strategy in this environmental effort is emissions trading.

On the border: Slovakia in maps

THE SLOVAK National Museum in Bratislava opens Slovakia in Maps from the 16th to the 20th Centuries. The exhibition documents the little known cartographic history of Slovakia, from the beginning of the 16th century to the present. The sub-theme of the exhibition is Slovak borders: national, regional and municipal.

More gives than takes

BY 2008, if everything goes according to plan, Slovakia will produce more cars per capita than any other country in the world.Even though Volkswagen is the only manufacturer currently producing cars in Slovakia, 32 percent of the country's overall exports belong to the automotive industry.
