CULTURE MATTERS: Creating harmony with a smile
IN THE RECENTLY published Spectacular Slovakia the general director of the Slovak Philharmonic, Marián Lapšanský, made an interesting claim. He said one reason his orchestra would do well on their tour of Japan and the lucrative Asian concert market in general was that the "Slavic temperament is just right for Asia because our musicians exhibit a perfect balance of emotion and precision".
Tatras arouse strong passions
BRUSSELS is becoming more involved in the recovery of Slovakia's Tatra mountains, which suffered severe damage in last November's windstorm. Apart from providing financial help to partially cover the damages, the EU wants to know whether the clean up operation is endangering the precious biosphere of the mountains, some places of which are proposed as Natura 2000 sites.
Východná needs to reach out
SLOVAKIA is a country with hugely diverse folklore traditions. The many variants scattered around particular regions are pieced together annually at Slovakia's largest folk festival, Východná. The culminating programmes are astounding mosaics of dynamic dances, tuneful songs, and richly embroidered costumes.

A SPECIAL Court aimed at dealing with the country's most serious and sophisticated criminals started operations in a former army barracks in Pezinok, close to Bratislava, on July 1.
Ruthenians-Ukrainians display their riches
NORTHEAST Slovakia, known for its extensive Ruthenian-Ukrainian minority, recently showcased the cultural wealth of the ethnicities.The Cultural Celebrations of Ruthenians-Ukrainians in Svidník annually held in the middle of June grandiosely kicked off its second half-century, welcoming performers from home as well as from Ukraine, Hungary, and Croatia.
