Canadian tourists feel Slovakia's lasting impact
AFTER our intital, brief interaction with Slovakia in May 2004, we went in search of resources to learn Slovak in Ottawa.One of our first stops was the Slovak Embassy, which was holding an exhibit by Slovak photographers Laco Struhár and Alexander Jiroušek. Entitled The Beauty of Slovakia, the exhibit featured scenes from Slovakia on a large tableau.
Survivors' memoirs released
THE MEMOIRS of the two men who were the first to escape from Auschwitz and tell the world what was really happening in Hitler's concentration camps has finally been released in English.Earlier this month, Alfréd Wetzler's memoir "Escape from Hell - The True Story of the Auschwitz Protocol", was published in English by Berghahn Books.
Visa-free travel depends on security
THE US' visa regime has been one of the most discussed issues in Slovak-American relations over the last few years. US President George W. Bush promised during his visit to Bratislava in 2005 to work with the Slovak government to reform the US visa policy.
Democracy in Slovakia will not be derailed
DEMOCRACY in countries from former communist bloc is stagnating or even decreasing, Freedom House, an international democracy watchdog, wrote in a report published on June 14, inspiring a debate among non-governmental organizations and think-tanks, but leaving most government officials unconcerned.
Slovak is easy, just find the right teacher
"WHAT'S the use of learning Slovak when it's a language that is spoken by only 5 million people and is completely useless outside Slovakia," foreigners living in Slovakia might ask. Although such reasoning is logical, the number of registrations that language schools are getting for Slovak courses suggests that this attitude is not shared by all; Slovak courses have found their place in language schools' portfolios alongside those teaching English, German and French.

Mečiar vetoes tuition fees
VLADIMÍR Mečiar, chairman of the ruling Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), unexpectedly vetoed a revision to the university bill, which would have instated tuition fees for part-time students.
Business and government reps to debate economy
SENIOR business executives and representatives of the Slovak government will discuss everything from attracting foreign direct investments to reform reversals and euro adoption at the Economist Conferences' Eighth Business Roundtable, which is to be held from June 25 to 26 in Bratislava.
