THE IRISH airline Ryanair is to start regular flights to Edinburgh, its eleventh destination from Bratislava, on September 24. The company announced on February 28 that the Scottish capital is to become its twenty-seventh airport base.

Slovak rockets sold to war-torn Sri Lanka

IN AN APPARENT violation of the EU’s Code of Conduct on Arms Exports, the Economy Ministry has approved a shipment of 10,000 artillery rockets to the Sri Lankan government, which is engaged in a civil war with Tamil Tiger rebels in which both sides are suspected of grave human rights abuses.

Wind farm project heads to eastern Slovakia

KOŠICE-based energy company Ventureal plans to construct a Sk2.4-billion wind farm near the village of Čečejovce, in eastern Slovakia. Vladimír Demjan of Ventureal unveiled the plan on April 1, the SITA newswire wrote.

Young people swap cigarettes for joints

SMOKING has become “out of fashion” for young people, with secondary school students’instead preferring alcohol and marijuana. More than half of them drink regularly and 44 percent have smoked “pot” recently. These are the results of the latest survey by the National Monitoring Centre for Drugs, which last year interviewed 10,688 students, the Pravda daily has reported.

Bratislava and Vienna want European Innovation Institute

SLOVAKIA and Austria want to host the planned European Innovation Institute, the SITA newswire wrote. On April 1, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer signed a joint letter addressed to European Union representatives in which they expressed their interest in hosting the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) in the Bratislava-Vienna development zone.

Bratislava airport and SkyEurope sign new contract

THE LOW-COST airline SkyEurope Airlines and M. R. Štefánik Bratislava Airport signed a new agreement on provision of services on March 17. The contract is based on the present relationship between the airport and what is the biggest local carrier, defining its terms and conditions for 2008 and 2009, according to information provided to the SITA newswire by airport spokeswoman Dana Madunická.

Death toll on Slovak roads falls

AFTER a catastrophic year in 2007 the situation on Slovak roads has started - gradually – to improve. The number of victims of car accidents decreased significantly in the first quarter of 2008 compared with the same period of the previous year, the Hospodárske Noviny financial daily reported. During the January-March period of 2007 car accidents took 118 lives, down 30. The number of seriously injured and the number of car accidents overall also fell.
