One in five businesses see advantages in euro adoption
A survey by the National Agency for the Development of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (NARMSP) found that 18 percent of medium-sized enterprises and self-employed people believe that euro adoption will have a positive impact on their business activities, the SITA newswire wrote.

Medics to go to Brussels over gap in wages
The gulf in wages between different health sector employees is continuing to widen and might end up in Brussels, according to the financial daily Hospodárske Noviny in its April 16 edition. Trade unionists have chosen Brussels as one target of protests they are preparing. "We will go to Brussels to point out that the Slovak government is not solving the problems of the health sector in a way that medical staff and patients would expect it to," said Anton Szalay, chief of the Slovak Health Trade Union Organization, representing 27,000 members.
Slovakia has met the inflation criterion for euro adoption, says analyst
Slovakia has met the nominal inflation criterion for adoption of the euro, scheduled for January 2009. Slovenská Sporiteľňa analyst Michal Mušák told the SITA newswire that Slovakia met the criterion with a cushion of 1 percentage point, since the twelve-month average for harmonised inflation in Slovakia is now 2.2 percent. The reference value for evaluating the criterion is 3.2 percent. Mušák explained that the Slovak Republic met the qualification but that an assessment of whether this will be sustainable remains to be made. According to him, sustainability will probably be evaluated positively given the large cushion.
Swine fever returns
The Sme daily reports on April 16 that classic swine fever has reappeared in Slovakia after a three-year absence. It was found in two big farms, in Dolné Semerovce (in Levice district) and in Rimavská Sobota, which will result in thousands of animals having to be culled. The EU banned the export of animals, pork and other meat products from Slovakia. It will reconsider the ban on Monday, April 21. Both farms are in quarantine while vets inspect neighbouring properties. SITA
New cash registers for euro
Businessmen will have to replace almost half of the 170,000 cash registers in shops, restaurants and market places around Slovakia because of the introduction of the euro, the Pravda daily reports on April 16 in its lead story.
EU Greens blast Slovakia for arms trade agreement with Sri Lanka
The Greens faction in the European Parliament on April 15 in Brussels condemned an arms trade agreement between Slovakia and Sri Lanka that it says violates multiple provisions of the European Union Code of Conduct on Arms Exports, the TASR newswire wrote.
Čaplovič: Record-high economic growth is unsustainable

Agriculture Ministry presents report on food safety for last year
The Agriculture Ministry's report on food safety for 2007 shows that the State Veterinary and Food Administration (SVPS) sent 61 notifications about inferior quality food products sold by Slovak retailers to the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF), which has been in place in EU member states for a few years already, the SITA newswire wrote.
SDKÚ criticises Labour Ministry proposal on inheritance
Pavol Frešo, an MP of the opposition SDKÚ-DS, called it “unacceptable” that Labour Minister Viera Tomanová has proposed to limit inheriting a second pension pillar policyholder’s savings if he or she dies before retirement, the SITA newswire wrote.
Hospitals join Trade Union in criticising health sector financing
The Slovak Association of Hospitals (ANS) has announced that it agrees with the Slovak Trade Union of Workers in Health Care and Social Services (SOZ) that the health care sector is underfunded, the SITA newswire wrote.
