A SEVEN-MEMBER Slovak medical team officially began work at the international airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. The team is serving with the Czech Army contingent's Field Hospital and Chemical Unit, which is itself part of the NATO ISAF mission in Afghanistan. A spokesman for the Slovak Armed Forces, Milan Vanga confirmed details of the deployment to the SITA newswire on April 7.

MILAN Rúfus, one of Slovakia's most renowned poets, has been awarded the 2008 Crane Summit award. The prize includes the translation of his poems into Chinese, the SITA newswire wrote.
Controversial Press Code passed; media mourn
ONE OF the Slovak media's greatest fears - a new law potentially limiting editorial autonomy - has become a reality: on April 9, the Slovak Parliament passed the controversial revision to the Press Code. The bill passed despite a shower of criticism from media experts, publishers and international bodies such as the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The bill was supported by 81 coalition MPs, with opposition parties opposing it.
High-altitude resorts safe from warm winter
IN SLOVAKIA, the last two consecutive winters can best be described as unseasonably warm. And even though the most recent winter was colder than the previous one, many ski resorts had difficulty keeping their lifts and cable chairs in operation even in mid-winter, due to lack of snow. Only ski resorts at altitudes above 1,000 metres reported consistently good skiing conditions over the entire season, but even they had to rely heavily on snow-making machines to keep their slopes white.
NBS to borrow 188 million euro banknotes

THE SPEAKER of Parliament, Pavol Paška of Smer, the main governing party, has ditched his plan to scrap parliamentary deputies' immunity from prosecution. He withdrew his proposal on April 9 after junior coalition parties refused to support its first reading in parliament, the Sme daily reported.

THE GATHERING pace of car production at Kia's factory near Žilina and the PSA Citroen plant in Trnava has contributed to a doubling in the number of cars made in Slovakia. Almost 600,000 were produced here last year, making Slovakia the world's largest per capita car manufacturer, producing 105 cars per 1,000 citizens, the Sme daily reported.
