Town of Stropkov wants to build industrial park worth Sk100 million
An industrial park worth Sk100 million (€3.32 million) that the town of Stropkov (Prešov region) is planning to build should create almost 300 new jobs within five years, it was announced on October 13. The Stropkov local authorities want to obtain part of the money from the Economy Ministry, which has voiced its support for the construction of brownfield industrial parks, the TASR news agency was told by Imrich Mako from the Stropkov town council. The town must submit its application for funds by October 17 of this year. A company called EC-EDMA will represent the town, prepare and carry out the project based on a mandate contract with Stropkov. Several foreign companies have shown interest in building facilities in Stropkov in the past. As the town didn't have any suitable sites, however, they changed their minds and left. TASR
Survey: German companies in Slovakia lack workforce
German companies in Slovakia lack a qualified workforce, according to a survey carried out this summer in 51 German-owned companies. The survey, which was conducted by the Slovak-German Trade and Industry Chamber in co-operation with Kienbaum Consultants, also revealed that salaries in the companies had increased by 9 percent year-to-year, while the German investors plan further increases. Dietrich Max Fey from energy-distribution company Západoslovenská energetika (ZSE) said that employees are already asking for higher salaries in connection with the introduction of the euro. He said that this is dangerous because companies may move further east in search of lower costs. As for the lack of professionals, Fey said that the situation is especially tense in Bratislava, where there aren't enough controllers and engineers.
Barabáš' High Tatras documentary wins award in Italy
Famous Slovak director and globetrotter Pavol Barabáš triumphed at the International Documentary Film Festival on Parks in the Italian city of Sondrio with his documentary 'Vysoké Tatry - divočina zmrznuta v case' (The High Tatras - a Wilderness Frozen in Time), it was announced on October 13.
Finance Ministry: 2009 state budget to show deficit of 1.7 % of GDP
The revised draft state budget in 2009 is now projected to post a deficit of 1.7 percent GDP, according to a modified state-budget draft published by the Finance Ministry on October 13. Revenues are expected to reach €13.222 billion (Sk398.33 billion), while originally they stood at €13.029 billion (Sk392.51 billion). Next year's expenditures should reach €14.109 billion (Sk425.05 billion), as opposed to the previously projected €13.526 billion (Sk407.48 billion). The deficit is thus expected to reach €887 million (Sk26.72 billion), while the previous draft calculated on a deficit of €497 million (Sk14.97 billion). The Finance Ministry has made substantial changes in both the revenues and expenditures, but the projected deficit of public finances has increased only moderately from €1.270 billion (Sk38.26 billion) to €1.272 billion (Sk38.32 billion). The total revenues of the public administration should reach €25.720 billion (Sk774.84 billion), which is 34.4 percent of GDP, while expenditures are expected to amount to €26.992 billion (Sk813.16 billion), which is 36.1 percent of GDP. The Finance Ministry expects the state deficit to be at 0.8 percent in 2010, while in 2011 it should be balanced. TASR

Tax and customs offices in Slovakia collected Sk201.365 billion (€ 6.684 billion) from taxpayers in revenue for the state budget from January to September of this year, which was Sk7.085 billion (€235.2 million) less than had been projected.

Number of public payphones likely to fall
THE SLOVAK Telecommunications Office (TÚ), Slovakia’s telecoms regulator, is to require that public payphones are distributed evenly and at least one such phone with disabled access is available in every community. This is the substance of a proposed regulation from the TÚ stipulating how public payphones and services for medically disabled users should be provided which it has submitted for inter-departmental review, the SITA newswire wrote.
Oštiepok gets EU protected status
FOLLOWING Skalický trdelník, Slovenská bryndza and Slovenská parenica, Slovakia has had another food product awarded protected status within the European Union (EU). On September 25, the European Commission registered several more traditionally made European food products, including Slovenský oštiepok, in a move intended to prevent them from being copied by food manufacturers outside the regions where they have historically been made, the Official Journal of the EU reported.
SNS boss crosses another line
JÁN Slota, chairman of the Slovak National Party (SNS), reached a new low, analysts say, in recent comments directed at Hungary and a member of its government. While delivering a speech in the village of Pavlovce, in the Prešov region, on October 5, Slota compared Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Kinga Göncz to Hitler.
