To be continued

THE TOP Slovak phrase of this week needs no translation, because it’s already in English. “To be continued”, said Prime Minister Fico as he was approaching the end of his press conference, where he provided evidence of shady financing of the opposition SDKÚ party, and warned the party of former prime minister Mikuláš Dzurinda that more damaging revelations are to come.

Still not enough snow.

The winter has come at last

FINALLY, the end of January and early February has given us a proper winter with freezing temperatures all day long and frigid conditions at night. But we still lack a good measure of snowfall. For example, the 30 centimetres of natural snow at Štrbské Pleso and the 85 centimetres at Chopok are far too little for the beginning of February. A normal base of snow would be over 1metre – but we will probably need to wait a little longer for that.

Opposition rallies at demo

THE NEARING elections and the accumulating scandals of the ruling government coalition caused at least a little bit of noise in Bratislava on the afternoon of Saturday, January 23. A protest demonstration with the theme “We like this country but we don’t like this government” reportedly attracted between 500 and 1,000 people to Bratislava’s central SNP Square. The crowd was made up of citizen activists aided by the centre-right opposition parties.

Political poll raises eyebrows

THE FIRST survey of the New Year, as the June national elections approach, to ask about the popularity of Slovakia’s political parties produced a surprise when its results showed a relatively small newcomer in the political arena, the Freedom and Solidarity party (SaS), ranking third. At the same time, the poll confirmed that the dominant party in the ruling coalition, Smer, enjoys widespread public support, with over 40 percent of those polled saying they would support it. But poll results released a few days later by another survey agency suggest that SaS should not become too euphoric.

PM takes potshot at former transport minister

ALMOST lost in the barrage of accusations Prime Minister Robert Fico has recently launched against the opposition SDKÚ party was a charge that former transport minister Pavol Prokopovič had signed a series of contracts ceding control of state land to several business groups in the last days of his tenure in 2006. Some of the contracts were signed even after the parliamentary elections in which Prokopovič’s SDKÚ lost to Fico’s Smer party.
