Slovak Justice Minister dismisses another official over escape of prisoners
Justice Minister Viera Petríková took further action in the wake of the escape by a prisoner from the Palace of Justice on February 26 – she dismissed the chief executive of the open section of the Institute for the Execution of Custody in Bratislava on March 1 but she did not reveal his name, the TASR newswire wrote. This follows the immediate dismissal of the director of the Institute, Jozef Mikula, on Friday. Petríková’s latest decision came after an inspection was carried out by the general director of the Prison and Justice Guard Corps, Mária Kreslová. The minister said that she would consider filing a criminal report citing either corruption or the abuse of public powers. She sees no reason to dismiss Kreslová, however.
Conservative Democratic party announces it won’t run in June election
The Conservative Democrats of Slovakia (KDS) party will not field candidates in the parliamnetary election in June, KDS spokesperson Mária Majdová told the TASR newswire on March 1. “We've decided not to seek voters’ support in the election in June, primarily because of the party’s financial situation,” said party leader Vladimír Palko. According to Palko, the party would be left with almost no funds for its campaign if it paid the election deposit of €16,600.
Lajčák attends V4 meeting in Budapest on Tuesday
Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák is taking part in a meeting of Visegrad Four member countries (Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Poland) in Budapest on Tuesday, March 2, ministry spokesman Peter Stano told the TASR newswire on March 1. The ministers will discuss opportunities for cooperation, including developing the V4's contacts with other regional groupings, said Stano. The V4 foreign affairs ministers will also meet representatives of countries belonging to the Eastern Partnership, the Baltic States, Belgium, Spain and a representative of the European Commission. Creditors of SkyEurope submit claims reaching €123 million
Creditors of bankrupt Slovakia-based SkyEurope Airlines met for their first meeting in Bratislava on March 1 and of the total of 3,400 creditors, around 70 registered at the meeting, the TASR newswire wrote.
Slovak state budget records a deficit of €780 million in February
The state budget recorded a deficit of €780 million in February, after recording a surplus of €23 million in January, the Finance Ministry announced on March 1, as reported by the TASR newswire. In February 2009, there was a deficit of €185 million. Budget revenues were up by 3.5 percent year-on-year at €1.461 billion in February 2010, or 11.7 percent of the expected sum for the whole year - €12.531 billion. Budget expenditures increased by 40.5 percent y-o-y to €2.242 billion. This was 13.8 percent of the scheduled sum for the whole of 2010 - €16.277 billion, TASR wrote. The government has promised an overall consolidation of public finances in 2010. The public deficit should fall to 5.5 percent of GDP in 2010 and to 4.2 percent in 2011 according to a plan approved in November.
V4 tourism agencies will travel to India to promote visits to central Europe
The national tourism agencies of the Visegrad Four countries (Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland) will put on their first promotion shows in five Indian cities between April 12 and 17, the TASR newswire was told by the Slovak Tourism Agency (SACR).
Radičová defeats Mikloš in SDKÚ election leader primary
Iveta Radičová won the top spot on the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party’s slate for the parliamentary elections in June after winning the party’s primary, SDKU representatives announced at a press briefing on Sunday, February 28, the TASR newswire wrote.

Slovaks who were in Chile when a massive earthquake struck the country on February 27 are all safe and well, Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Peter Stano told TASR on February 28.
