A total of 29 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity were produced in Slovakia in 2009, which exceeded consumption by 3 TWh due to the economic crisis, according to the latest issue of a weekly issued by the Slovak-German Trade and Industry Chamber.

The planned construction of an oil pipeline set to be built between Bratislava and Schwechat, Austria might change the Land Use Plan of Bratislava’s Petržalka district, Petržalka Mayor Milan Ftáčnik informed journalists at a press conference on March 17.

Making all the votes count
THE NUMEROUS communities of Slovaks living outside the borders of their motherland could influence the outcome of the parliamentary elections in June. Most of them, however, have given up their chance to vote because they thought the voting procedure was too complicated and time-consuming. In response, organisations of Slovaks living in foreign countries have started a campaign to raise awareness about the possibilities for these citizens to make a contribution to political life ‘back home’ by voting in the 2010 parliamentary elections.
Inland canal will permit ships to sail through Kysuce
The Slovak state has signed the European Agreement about inland waterways of international importance. Part of the plan is to build a canal that would connect the Váh River to the Odra River and on to the Baltic Sea. The plan may mean the demolition of about one-third of the northern-Slovak town of Kysucké Nové Mesto, the daily Sme wrote on its website on March 17.
Slovakia garners gold medals at the Winter Paralympics
On Tuesday, March 16, Slovakia had already won three gold medals after four days of competition at the Winter Paralympics, the SITA newswire wrote.

March poll shows Smer would win elections, KDH would be second
If parliamentary elections had been held in mid-March, the ruling party Smer would win with 38 percent of votes. Next would be the opposition Christian-Democrat Movement (KDH) with 13.4 percent; the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) would be third with 12.7 percent, based on the results of a telephone survey carried out by Polis agency between March 13 and 16 on a sample of 1,280 respondents, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovak Constitutional Court to examine Act on Non-profit Organisations
The Constitutional Court will be asked to examine Slovakia’s Act on Non-Profit Organisations which became effective February 1, 2010, based on a complaint filed by opposition MPs, Independent MP and Most-Híd party members, Gábor Gál told the TASR newswire on March 16. According to Gál, the complaint has been signed by 43 MPs from the opposition Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), the Conservative Democrats of Slovakia (KDS) and Most-Híd. Members of the SMK party did not sign it, he noted.
European Commission sends first results of Slovak social companies audit
The European Commission sent the first results of its December audit of Slovakia's so-called social companies to the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Ministry on Tuesday, March 16, though the findings were not made public.
Advertising consultant launches joke party
Advertising and marketing consultant Igor Brossman announced the launch of a new party, Paliho kapurkov (i.e. Paul's one(-drink)-for-the-road) Merry Political Party, on March 16, ahead of the general election due in June. "In this election, Paliho kapurkov represents the last choice for all desperate and disenchanted voters," Brossman said.
Court acquits former Rača mayor of bribery charges
On Tuesday, March 16, a panel of judges at the Specialised Criminal Court in Pezinok acquitted former Bratislava-Rača district mayor and one-time Christian Democrat (KDH) senior official Pavol Bielik and his co-accused, businessman Jaroslav Šuščák, of corruption charges. The court said that it had not been proven beyond reasonable doubt that the deed for which they were prosecuted really took place as the prosecution claimed, the SITA newswire wrote.
Completion of Mochovce considered by UN committee
Greenpeace and other NGOs said on Tuesday, March 16, that later the same day they would present their case against Slovakia regarding completion of the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant (Nitra Region) before the United Nations Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee in Geneva.
President Gašparovič says Slovakia and Slovenia should cooperate during crisis
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič, attending a bilateral business forum on the second day of his three-day official visit to Slovenia on March 15, called for more cooperation between economic representatives and entrepreneurs of the two countries against the backdrop of the global economic crisis, the TASR newswire wrote.
Slovak Prime Minister asks the president to not sign the Patriotism Act
On March 14, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer party) informally asked Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič to not sign the Patriotism Act, recently passed by the parliament, which was prepared by the Slovak National Party (SNS). The prime minister’s main objection was its effective date as Fico considers the act better to be valid from the beginning of next school year, September 1, the Sme daily wrote on its website.
Slovak Prime Minister Fico criticises remarks by the president of Hungary
The statement by Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom that members of the Hungarian minority in Slovakia, Serbia and Romania should learn the state language only as a foreign language is an attack on the integrity of Slovakia, Prime Minister Robert Fico said, as reported by the SITA newswire.
