Spas in Slovakia
SLOVAKIA is rich in the thermal and mineral waters needed to create good spas. The spas specialise in treating certain diseases and disorders but have also pursued the newer market for wellness and relaxation treatments and thus extended their clientele beyond traditional spa visitors. Slovak spas cater to people suffering from mobility problems, neurological disorders skin diseases and women’s diseases.
Slovakia pitches for foreign health tourists
NO LONGER do people travel abroad just to see historical sights, experience foreign culture, go shopping or enjoy the sea. Now, along with memories of castles or galleries, some of them return home with new or modified teeth, artificial hip joints or new noses. Slovakia, with its lower health-care prices, wants to get a share of this market, but the health tourism business differs from traditional business segments as medical treatment providers primarily need to win the confidence of potential foreign clients. There are several medical facilities in Slovakia with ambitions to attract foreign clients not just through low prices but also based on the high quality of care they can offer.
Survey: over 40% happy with their jobs
ABOUT one third of Slovaks are unhappy with their current job or line of business, according to a survey conducted by the Social Research Institute of Infostat released on July 18.
Aqua parks in Slovakia
APART from traditional spas where people go for treatment of specific medical conditions, a number of water parks designed for fun and relaxation as well as wellness have sprung up around Slovakia over the past few years. Most of these resorts offer thermal springs and assorted water attractions as well as wellness centres and most are open year-round. Here is a sampling of the aqua parks in Slovakia:
Žilina offers popular rickshaw transport again this summer
The popular Asian means of transport – the rickshaw – is criss-crossing the streets of Žilina again this year. Last year more than 1,500 people were transported in this way and covered about 1,600 kilometres.

Prime Minister Radičová meets with 25 Slovak NGOs
A Plenipotentiary Office for Non-governmental Organisations which Prime Minister Iveta Radičová seeks to establish was the main topic of talks on Thursday, July 22, between the Prime Minister and twenty-five non-profit organizations, the SITA newswire reported.
Dzurinda holds farewell meeting with Austrian Ambassador
Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda on Thursday, July 22, met with Austrian Ambassador to Slovakia Helmut Wessely upon completion of the diplomat's mission in Slovakia, the ministry's press department told the TASR newswire on the same day. Dzurinda appreciated the contribution that the outgoing ambassador made towards the development of Slovak-Austrian relations. In addition, both officials discussed possibilities of boosting regional co-operation and mutual projects.
PM Radičová leaves for working trip to Poland
Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová leaves on Friday, July 23 for a working trip to Poland, the TASR newswire reported. On her one-day visit to Warsaw, Radičová is scheduled to meet her Polish counterpart Donald Tusk as well as the Chairman of the Polish Parliament (the Sejm) Grzegorz Schetyna, who is currently acting as the country’s president.
Váhostav-SK announces mass layoff of 500 employees
One of the largest construction companies in Slovakia, Váhostav-SK, based in Žilina, will lay off five hundred employees, which is about a quarter of its staff members.
Slovakia’s Defence Minister says recognition of Kosovo is not in the cards
Slovakia’s negative stance towards the unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence is not subject to change, Defence Minister Ľubomír Galko said on Thursday, July 22, during his working visit to Prague in the wake of a decision in the afternoon from the International Court of Justice in The Hague that Kosovo's declaration of independence was not illegal, the TASR newswire reported.
Reducing deficit below 3 percent of GDP before 2013 is Slovakia’s priority
The new Slovak government plans to unify the rates of the value-added tax, reads a draft of the government’s programme statement elaborated by the Finance Ministry, the SITA newswire reported. Government: former cabinet proxy continued to be paid even after his job had ended
Daniel Duchoň, the previous government’s proxy for the preparation of an informal meeting of NATO defence ministers in Slovakia received remuneration even after the meeting in question had been held (in October last year, in Bratislava), Prime Minister Iveta Radičová said on Wednesday, July 21. Duchoň’s post was scrapped following a government decision taken the same day.

The Svätopluk statue installed in the courtyard of Bratislava Castle represents an example of bad taste rather than fascism, Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic said on Wednesday, July 21, the TASR newswire reported.
Radičová: Fico spent most of PM’s reserve fund
Prime Minister Iveta Radičová has said that after taking office earlier this month she found that most of the funds in the prime minister’s reserve had already been spent during the first half of 2010. Radičová became prime minister earlier this month, after former premier Robert Fico lost the general election held on June 12.
Slovak shot-putter tests positive for banned substance, faces lifetime ban
Slovak shot-putter Milan Haborák tested positive in a B-sample analysis for the banned substance stanozolol, the Slovak Anti-Doping Agency (ADA) announced on Wednesday, July 21. As this is Haborák’s second doping offence, he will probably receive a lifetime ban.
