The Slovak cabinet on Wednesday, July 21, approved a proposal by Prime Minister Iveta Radičová to re-establish the Environment Ministry as an independent department. The ministry was cancelled and its functions transferred to other departments earlier this month as part of a reorganisation approved in January by the previous government.

EU to give €88 million to Slovakia for new trains

The European Union has approved a grant of €88 million to the Slovak passenger railway company ŽSSK to purchase rolling stock, including wagons for inter-regional and commuter transportation. The money will be used through the European Regional Development Fund to modify the control systems of ten existing electric locomotives series and to buy 32 new train sets and two three-system locomotives.

Justice Minister Žitňanská to change the way of selecting judges

Justice Minister Lucia Žitňanská from the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) plans to change the way in which judges are selected by introducing open competition, the TASR newswire learned from Eva Dukátová of the Justice Ministry press department on Monday, July 19. According to Dukátová, the first thing that the new minister plans to do is to abolish the selection process for judges' posts. By this decision, Žitňanská hopes to put a stop to previous ways in which judges' posts are assigned and create conditions in which the best candidates can succeed regardless of who the justice minister happens to be.

IMF estimates Slovakia's public deficit at 7-8 percent for 2010

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that Slovakia’s public finance deficit will reach 7-8 percent of GDP this year. Survey finds more Slovaks are happy than unhappy with their jobs

About a third of Slovaks are unhappy with their current job or line of business, according to a survey released on Sunday, July 18, conducted by Infostat's Social Research Institute. Analyst says that signing EFSF makes Slovakia’s deficit-cutting more difficult

As a result of the Slovak government's agreement to sign the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), the country’s budget deficit will almost certainly go up, Andrej Beňo, an analyst with the F.A.
