Upper Nitra floods claim at least one life
Extensive flooding in the Upper Nitra area on August 15 claimed a first victim, Lucia Garajová from the Interior Ministry told the TASR newswire. The storm lasting for several hours in Upper Nitra caused localised floods, with the towns of Handlová and Prievidza in Trenčín Region facing the most difficult circumstances. The overflowing Handlovka River submerged several roads in Prievidza shortly after noon as well as a road connecting Prievidza and nearby Handlová. “One person, a man from Prievidza, is missing, and unfortunately, one victim has been reported, too,” said Garajová, adding that the dead man was probably from Handlová though no exact information was yet available.
Interior Minister Lipšic and Defence Minister Galko visit flooded areas
Interior Minister Daniel Lipšic from the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) visited the flooded towns of Handlová and Prievidza and villages in the Upper Nitra area on August 15 to personally see the current situation, the TASR newswire was told by the Interior Ministry’s spokesperson Lucia Garajová.
Prievidza declares state of emergency as Handlovka River floods the town
A state of crisis and a third-degree flood alert were declared in the town of Prievidza on Sunday, August 15, at 14:00, the TASR newswire reported. The overflowing Handlovka River shortly after noon submerged several roads in the town as well as a road connecting Prievidza and the nearby town of Handlová.
Slovakia’s cabinet to discuss assistance to towns damaged by flash floods
At its session on Wednesday, August 18, the Slovakia’s cabinet will devote attention to the flash floods that devastated some regions of the country over the past weekend, the SITA newswire reported.
Polls examine holiday preferences
A poll taken by the GfK agency for the Wall Street Journal Europe found that this year residents of central and eastern Europe are more reluctant to take a holiday than people living in western Europe. The poll found that slightly less than 30 percent of respondents take a two week holiday each year, about the same percentage have a one week holiday and 13 percent of respondents prefer a holiday shorter than 7 days, the SITA newswire wrote. About two-thirds of the respondents will stay in their homeland for their holidays. In Hungary and Poland (as in Portugal, Spain, Italy and France) locals mostly prefer a holiday at home. Czechs travel more often to foreign countries while in Germany 37 percent stay home and about 30 percent head towards southern Europe.
Artworks from human hair
The Gemer-Malohont Museum in Rimavská Sobota is attracting visitors with an interesting exhibition of artworks made from human hair. Each month the exhibitions change and currently the paintings in gilded wooden frames come from a school for girls in Rimavská Sobota and show the tastes of the bourgeois class of this region during the second half of the 19th century.
Children learn traditional crafts in Čičmany
To make a spoon from linden-tree wood with one’s own hands, to roll pastry and bake gingerbread, or to make various items from clay – that’s what children were learning in the beginning of July in Čičmany, a village in northern Slovakia which is famous for its ornamented houses and folklore. The creative workshops called Na vlastnej koži život našich predkov zažiť (To Experience Our Ancestors’ Lives through One’s Own Skin) were organised by the Čičmany Folklore-Art Association and the Environmentalists from Prievidza civic association.

The 82nd anniversary of the birthday of Andy Warhol, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, was celebrated in Košice on August 6 with the opening of an exhibition entitled Andy Warhol and Julia. It portrays the relationship between the eccentric artist and his mother – but it has been overshadowed by a dispute between authors and curators which looks set to go to court.
Protecting young, endangered Montagu harriers
Ornithologists are searching for the nests of Montagu harriers, a rare bird of prey living in Slovakia’s lowlands, to try to protect them from famers’ harvesting activities. The birds build their nests directly on the soil within fields of crops. “Each year, a fight for time begins as the harrier offspring start flying about the same time as the beginning of the harvest” said Michal Noga of the BirdLife Slovakia NGO to the TASR newswire. He explained that it is not always easy to find a harrier’s nest as they are usually hidden in high crops over acres of land, adding that the really hard work begins only after the nest has been found.
International volunteers work at castle ruins
Three castle ruins in eastern Slovakia welcomed foreign volunteers in August with the task to help with renovation works at the castles. More than 20 young people from Europe (Netherlands, Finland, Portugal, and Italy) as well as from Korea and Japan are involved in the renewal work at of the castle ruins in Šariš, Brekov and Kamenica. The international project is tutored by INEX Slovakia, a civic non-profit association, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovakia rejects participating in loan deal for Greece
THE RECOMMENDATION by Iveta Radičová’s government to reject any share of the costs of the multi-billion rescue loan for Greece found sympathetic ears in Slovakia’s parliament. The deputies rejected any additional codicils to the original agreement signed by the previous government that were required if Slovakia was to contribute any cash to the Greek loan programme.
Slovak Supreme Court states its doors are ‘forever closed’ to Finance Ministry audit
The doors are forever closed to Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš from the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and his auditors, Slovakia’s Supreme Court wrote in a statement in reaction to the announcement of Mikloš about the fines he levied against the court and its president and the Finance Ministry’s preparation to lodge criminal motions against Chief Justice Štefan Harabin, the SITA newswire wrote.
Finance Minister Mikloš says his predecessors wasted money on media training
The Finance Ministry spent more than €30,000 each year on media training courses for former finance minister Ján Počiatek, ministry state secretary Peter Kazimír, and ministry spokesman Miroslav Šmál between 2007 and 2010, the current Finance Minister, Ivan Mikloš, said on August 12, as reported by TASR. “It was money that was supposed to improve the qualifications of Finance Ministry employees. Tens of thousands (of euros) were spent on media training courses for three people instead,” Mikloš told TASR. Though he conceded that politicians need to undergo such training, he stated that it should be funded by political parties instead. He stated that the new leadership of the Finance Ministry has found several cases involving what he called dubious spending.

Agriculture Minister Zsolt Simon from Most-Híd party and Transport Minister Ján Figeľ from the Christian Democratic Movement agreed on Thursday, August 12 how to divide up responsibilities for the regional development agenda, the TASR newswire reported.
Danube Wings carried over 50,000 passengers between January and July
Slovak airline carrier Danube Wings announced that it transported 57,034 passengers in the first seven months of this year, with 49,469 customers using the airline’s regular routes and 7,565 taking charter flights. In June and July, some 12,000 tourists travelled with Danube Wings to Croatian, Bulgarian and Italian destinations, the TASR newswire wrote on August 12.
Slovak MPs and ministers will be asked to take salary cuts
Members of Slovakia’s parliament and cabinet ministers will have to live with lower salaries than what they currently receive, based on an agreement made by the leaders of the governing coalition of four centre-right parties, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Híd at their Coalition Council meeting on Wednesday, August 11, reported the TASR newswire.
