Slota: Smer violated agreement with SNS on local elections

Smer has nominated a candidate for the mayoralty of Žilina, in northern Slovakia, despite an agreement with the Slovak National Party (SNS) that it would support its candidate, SNS chairman Ján Slota told the TASR newswire on Tuesday, September 28.

The director general of Tipos, Slovakia’s state-run lottery company, Stanislav Žiačik, resigned on September 28, citing personal reasons, the SITA newswire wrote. Žiačik resigned before the Tipos Supervisory Board was set to deliver its report based on an investigation of contracts which Tipos had awarded to the PR agency VYV, which had been co-owned by Žiačik until 2001. Finance Minister Ivan Mikloš accepted Žiačik's resignation, his spokesman Martin Jaroš told SITA.

Economy Minister Miškov says changing board of enterprise agency won’t be easy

The managing board of the National Agency for Development of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (NADSME) will not have its next session until October 4 and carrying out the wish of Prime Minister Iveta Radičová to dismiss all persons on the management board will not be easy, said Economy Minister Juraj Miškov (SaS) to the TASR newswire on September 27. The agency is an interest group made up of corporate bodies along with the Economy Ministry, the Association of Slovak Entrepreneurs (ZPS) and the Slovak Tradesmen Association (SZZ). Radičová gave Miškov only seven days to dismiss the entire NADSME managing board last Friday (September 24). However, according to the NADSME statutes, it takes at least seven days to convene the managing board.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dzurinda tells Budapest that Slovakia wants new bridges

Slovakia and Hungary want to build new bridges, both physically and metaphorically, said Foreign Affairs Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda after meeting his Hungarian counterpart in Budapest on September 27, the TASR newswire wrote. Dzurinda visited Hungary for the first time since he became chief of Slovak diplomacy following the June 12 election. Both officials agreed to infuse new blood into the 12 Slovak-Hungarian commissions designed to tackle the most important issues in the sometimes troubled relations between the two countries.

The main criticism of SNS current situation comes from within the party: Anna Belousovová, who failed to maintain her post as deputy chair, said the congress was manipulated and that SNS is on its way to political oblivion under Slota.

PM Radičová visits Slovak army contingent at Šajkovac base in Kosovo

Prime Minister Iveta Radičová has a one-day working visit to Kosovo to meet the Slovak KFOR-SLOVCON contingent and its commander Major General Erhard Buhler, the Government Office informed the TASR newswire on September 27. At the military base, Radičová will lay a wreath at the monument for the 42 victims of the January 19, 2006 aircraft disaster that occurred in northern Hungary. The plane was carrying Slovak Armed Forces' peacekeepers from this mission back to Slovakia. Future Environment Minister Nagy will seek € 15 million from Interblue Group

The Agriculture, Environment and Regional Development Ministry’s State Secretary – and soon-to-be Environment Minister – József Nagy (Most-Híd party) on Monday, September 27, announced that he will do his utmost to retrieve €15 million from Slovakia's sale of emission quotas to the Interblue Group, the TASR newswire reported. PM Radičová says Supreme Audit Office will review Hayek Consulting contracts

The four coalition parties agreed that there are certain questions regarding contracts awarded to Hayek Consulting company, which was co-owned by Economy Ministry State Secretary Martin Chren (SaS) and Transport Ministry State Secretary Ivan Švejna (Most-Híd) but they do not agree on what action should be taken at this time, Prime Minister Iveta Radičová and SaS chairman Richard Sulík said at a press conference on Friday, September 24, the SITA newswire reported. The two therefore agreed that via parliament they will ask Slovakia’s Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) to carry out an inspection into the effectiveness of the money spent by state institutions in contracts with Hayek Consulting.

Ministry to assess fines only as a last resort for violations of State Language Act

An amendment to the widely-criticised State Language Act that would considerably soften restrictions on the use of ethnic minority languages under the law passed by the former government of Robert Fico was approved by the new government on September 24, the TASR newswire reported. If passed by parliament, the new measures effective as of January will impose a fine only for the failure to release official information concerning the health and safety of Slovak citizens in the state language. The Culture and Tourism Ministry will move to impose the €50-€2,500 fines only as last resort. Currently, fines of between €100-5,000 are stipulated by law, TASR newswire wrote.

Supreme Court files libel complaint against head of Fair-Play Alliance
