Coalition makes last- minute pick
AFTER weeks of tension the four parties that make up Slovakia’s ruling coalition left it until the very last minute to pick a joint candidate for general prosecutor. Jozef Čentéš, currently a deputy director of the penal department at the Office of the General Prosecutor, is the coalition leaders’ compromise choice to challenge incumbent Dobroslav Trnka in a parliamentary vote on December 2.
Judge’s daughter seeks investigation
THE DAUGHTER of late judge Marta Lauková, who shortly before her death in September claimed that her superior, Gabriela Buľubášová, the head of the Bratislava I district court, had attempted to influence one of her decisions, is asking that the investigation of her mother’s complaint continues.
VOTE: Municipal elections confirm Smer’s strength

THE PARTY of former prime minister Robert Fico, Smer, which received the most votes in this June’s parliamentary election, confirmed its position as the party with the highest level of popular support in Saturday’s municipal elections. Candidates of Smer were elected as mayors in 599 municipalities according to the official results published by Slovakia’s Statistics Office.

THE EIGHT regional capitals of Slovakia witnessed several changes in their municipal leadership in Saturday’s municipal elections. According to the unofficial results published by Slovakia’s Statistics Office, after votes from 2,166 of the 2,924 towns and villages have been counted, the new mayor of the Slovak capital will be Milan Ftáčnik, who ran as an independent candidate with the support of the opposition Smer party. His challenger Magdaléna Vášáryová, a candidate of the coalition of centre-right ruling parties, finished second, according to preliminary unofficial results reported by daily Sme.
VOTE: Luník IX borough of Košice voting suspended for 10 minutes
The local election committee chairman Ladislav Petráš interrupted the municipal elections at Luník IX borough of Košice for 10 minutes around noon on Saturday, TASR newswire reported.
VOTE: Polling stations closed; results expected on Sunday, 10:00 am
Polling stations for municipal elections in nearly 3,000 cities, towns and villages were closed on Saturday at 8 pm. The only exception is a polling station in the Košice borough of Luník IX, where the polls stayed open for an extra 10 minutes because voting was interrupted for 10 minutes earlier in the day due to allegations of vote-buying, TASR newswire reported.

Samsung to add 1,000 new jobs in Slovakia next year
Samsung Slovakia will hire another 1,000 people to produce LCD panels during the early months of next year. But the company, one of the country’s biggest employers, says it would welcome improvements in the business environment through changes to the Labour Code and the education system, Prime Minister Iveta Radičová said.
SaS nominees are not patrons, but founding members, says Sulík
Ľubor Benkovič and Jozef Boskovič, who as nominees of Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), one of Slovakia’s four governing parties, sit on the supervisory boards of two major state-run firms, donated money to the party as founding members, not as sponsors, stressed SaS leader Richard Sulík on Wednesday, November 24, in response to a news conference by opposition leader Robert Fico.
