The Environment Ministry is preparing an amendment to the law on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) that should respond to reservations set out recently by the European Commission (EC), the ministry press department told the TASR newswire on Thursday, February 17.
Zemková officially appointed; Kollár becomes RTVS Council head
The recently selected director of Radio and Television Slovakia (RTVS), Miroslava Zemková, and nine members of the media council received their letters of appointment from Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulík (Freedom and Solidarity (SaS)) on Thursday, February 17.

Martin Chren intends to resign as Economy Ministry state secretary
The state secretary (deputy minister) of Slovakia’s Economy Ministry, Martin Chren from Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, will resign his post on February 17, TV news channel TA3 reported, saying that Chren would then return to parliament as a member. The TASR newswire stated his resignation is not connected to an agreement reached on February 16 between the SaS and its Ordinary People faction. Chren is expected to announce his reasons for resigning at a press conference at 16:00 on Thursday, February 17.
Slovaks detained in UK in connection with ‘fictitious weddings’
British police, in cooperation with its immigration service, detained 10 people in the north-west of the UK on February 16, including several Slovak women and one man who are thought to belong to an international gang that organised fake weddings in order to help immigrants acquire British citizenship, the SITA newswire reported.
Romanian Foreign Minister Baconschi visits Slovakia
The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Baconschi, is visiting Slovakia on February 17 to meet with his Slovak counterpart Mikuláš Dzurinda and discuss bilateral relations and current European issues, the SITA newswire reported.
Government allocates €3.85 million to Schengen Information System II

Slovakia will provide training to Iraqi military engineers to help them use Slovak-made Božena mine-clearance devices, Slovak Defence Minister Ľubomír Galko said after meeting Iraqi Ambassador to Slovakia Matheel Dhayif Majeed Al-Sabti on Wednesday, February 16, the TASR newswire reported.
Three Ordinary People MPs to remain in SaS caucus

Deutsche Telekom reportedly to launch financial service centre in Slovakia
German telecoms company Deutsche Telekom has chosen Slovakia for an investment worth several million euros that will also provide about 500 jobs, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on Wednesday, February 16. It cited an unnamed senior source from the Slovak Economy Ministry who wished to remain anonymous.
Slovakia will participate in EBRD capital hike
Slovakia is to participate in a €10-billion capital increase announced by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). In line with a Finance Ministry proposal, Slovakia should subscribe to 3,842 callable shares each with a nominal value of €10,000, which would mean Slovakia preserves its present 0.43-percent share of the bank’s voting rights.
Slovak economy minister holds talks with Russian energy minister
Slovak Economy Minister Juraj Miškov offered Russia the opportunity to participate in investment projects in Slovakia at a meeting with Russian Energy Minister Sergei Ivanovich Shmatko. The Economy Ministry reported that Miškov stressed that Slovakia is particularly interested in investments with a higher added value aimed at building a knowledge-based economy.
Regional security conference to take place in Bratislava
The most important conference on international relations and security in central Europe, GLOBSEC 2011, will take place in Bratislava on March 2-4, the SITA newswire reported. Deputy defence ministers from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Great Britain will discuss how to tackle growing differences between goals and capabilities in defence.
Seven prime ministers meet in Bratislava
BELARUS, energy security and food prices were the leading topics of a summit of Visegrad Group (V4) prime ministers which took place in Bratislava on February 15 – exactly 20 years after the grouping was established in the northern Hungarian town of Visegrad. Slovakia currently holds the presidency of the organisation. German chancellor Angela Merkel was among other regional leaders who also attended the summit, and congratulated the four V4 members.
Minister: Aviation Days to take place in Sliač, ministry to save €100,000
The National Aviation Days event will not take place in Piešťany (Trnava Region) but in Sliač (Banska Bystrica Region) this year, Defence Minister Ľubomír Galko said on Tuesday, February 15, referring to allegations about overpayment for the event in past years.
V4 premiers concerned about global rise in food prices
The premiers of the Visegrad Four countries (Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland) are concerned about the global rise in food prices, raw materials and energy, which they say represents an enormous burden for ordinary people, according to a joint communiqué from the premiers presented by Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová after a seven-nation summit held on Tuesday, February 15, in Bratislava.
Employment rate grew by 0.5 percent year-on-year in 4Q10
The employment rate in Slovakia grew by 0.5 percent year-on-year in the final quarter of 2010, with a total of 2.172 million people employed, according to a preliminary estimate published by the Statistics Office on Tuesday, February 15, and quoted by the TASR newswire.
