Meeting the challenges of health tourism
HEALTH tourism has been recognised as a promising business in many countries around the world. The Slovak Spectator spoke to Zeno Veselík, director of KPMG in the Czech Republic, about the current position of Slovakia in this sector and its prospects for becoming a major health-tourism destination.
Egyptian Al-Nour Wal Amal orchestra gives a concert in Bratislava
The chamber orchestra of Al-Nour Wal Amal association consists of blind and visually impaired female musicians. The Al-Nour Wal Amal association, founded in 1954, is an NGO offering education to visually impaired girls. On Friday, September 9, its chamber orchestra comes to Slovak capital to play works of old Western classical-, as well as Egyptian modern classical music: by G. A. Rossini, A. A. Eleid, R. Garrana, J. Brahms, G. Verdi, G. P. Reverberi (Swiss Medley, composed for this occasion), P. Tchaikovski, A. Khachaturian, W.A. Mozart, R. Dawood, A. Khairat, B. Bartók, A. Dvořák, G. Bizet, and M. Theodorakis. Conductor is Dr. Ali Osman.The concert, organised by the Egyptian Embassy to Slovakia and BKIS, takes place in City Theatre of P. O. Hviezdoslav (DPOH) at 19:00 and admission is free. Music lovers are invited to support the Egyptian musicians and enjoy their music.
Three persons arrested on charges of kickbacks from EU Structural Funds
Slovak police arrested three men who have been accused of corruption linked to the drawing of money from European Structural Funds and one of the accused is a former advisor to Lucia Nicholsonová, the current State Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, the Sme daily reported.
Pavol Demitra’s body is identified by Russian authorities
Russian investigators have finished identifying bodies found after the plane crash near Yaroslavl and officially confirmed that Slovak ice hockey player Pavol Demitra died during the crash on September 7, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ľuboš Schwarzbacher, told the TASR newswire.
SaS publishes brochure criticising proposed changes in EFSF
The Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, a member of the four party ruling coalition, released a 16-page brochure it prepared to challenge what it called ‘myths’ surrounding the possible disapproval of a second bailout package for Greece and broadening the lending capacity of the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF), the SITA newswire reported.

The regional prosecutor’s office in Banská Bystrica will deal with the anonymous criminal complaint that has been filed regarding the rental of premises for the tax office in Košice, the TASR newswire reported.
Bratislava will commemorate the 9/11 tragedy in the USA
Slovaks will be able to participate in a ceremony to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2011 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington DC that will be held in Bratislava this Sunday, September 11. The information was announced by Bratislava Mayor Milan Ftáčnik after meeting with the US Ambassador to Slovakia, Theodore Sedgwick, the TASR newswire reported.

Police officers go on trial, accused of abusing Roma children
The trial has begun in Košice of police officers accused of abusing Roma children at a police station in the city in spring 2009. The case was received extensive coverage in the Slovak media after a private tape recording of the policemen's conduct was released.
Judicial Council refuses to back Harabin
The Judicial Council, which is chaired by Supreme Court president Štefan Harabin, voted not to support a proposed motion to the Constitutional Court which would have launched a disciplinary proceeding against a Constitutional Court senate composed of three judges, namely Ján Luby, Ladislav Orosz and Ľudmila Gajdošíková.
Fico tops trustworthiness poll, followed by Radičová
Opposition Smer party leader Robert Fico was again found to be the most trustworthy politician in Slovakia according to a poll carried out by the MVK agency, the TASR newswire reported, citing MVK’s Pavel Haulík, on Wednesday, September 7.
Slovak paedophile jailed in UK
A Slovak citizen, Juraj Badi, aged 45, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the United Kingdom after being convicted of sexually abusing a British girl over a 2-year period. Badi’s crimes led to the girl becoming pregnant at the age of 15. The crimes were committed in the northern English city of Bradford, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote on Thursday, September 8.
Hockey star dies in plane crash (video included)
SLOVAKS at first greeted news that one of the nation’s top ice hockey players had been killed in a Russian plane crash with disbelief. But incredulous readers’ comments under the first reports on Slovak news websites about the tragedy were soon overtaken by massive media coverage, shock, grief and even tears, once reports of the death of the Slovak national hockey team’s ex-captain, Pavol Demitra, were confirmed.

Coalition leaders fail to reach final decisions on 2012 state budget
Details of the state budget to be offered for 2012 remain open after a meeting of leaders of the four ruling coalition parties on September 7.
