Parliamentary committee specifies reason for vote to oust RTVS chief
Parliament's culture and media committee on June 19 officially added its justification for its previous resolution to dismiss the head of public-service Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS), Miloslava Zemková, the TASR newswire reported.
Parliament may pass the ESM Treaty on Thursday, June 21
Slovakia may join the list of countries that have ratified the treaty on the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) as early as June 21, Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška told a press conference after meeting European Commission Vice-president Maroš Šefčovič on June 19, the TASR newswire wrote. "I personally believe that we can join the countries that are complying with their commitments on Thursday evening," said Paška to TASR. The issues will be debated in parliament beginning at 9:00 on Thursday.

Hotline for missing children
LOVE, a broken family relationship, a sense of adventure or even a kidnapping are some of the reasons for an increasing number of missing children in Slovakia and that is why it has joined in a campaign across Europe to raise awareness about a telephone number for reporting missing children: the 116-000 hotline. The campaign was initiated on May 25, International Missing Children’s Day, by an NGO called Missing Children Europe which also announced at the same time that it had launched new technology via Google to help in finding missing children.
Slovakia to ratify ESM by the end of June
SLOVAKIA will not stand in the way of the start of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) in July as Prime Minister Robert Fico pledged that the legislation will be approved by the Slovak parliament before the end of June. The prime minister held a roundtable meeting with representatives of the parliamentary opposition on June 14 to discuss the ESM issue and the political leaders also agreed that they would swap ideas on how to achieve fiscal consolidation in Slovakia.
Two Slovenians arrested by Slovak police in heroine production case
Slovakia’s special prosecutor’s office has charged two Slovenians with trading in Anhydride acetic acid that can be used in the production of heroine. If found guilty, the men could face 25 years in prison or a life sentence, the TASR newswire reported.
Talks start about change in ownership of SPP gas utility
The Economy Ministry and Slovakia’s National Property Fund (FNM), the country’s privatisation agency and owner of shares in several partially-owned state companies, will begin talks with Energetický a Průmyslový Holding (EPH) company over a taking a stake in ownership of Slovenský Plynárenský Priemysel (SPP), Slovakia’s primary gas utility. The issue is to be discussed by the government at its next session, the TASR newswire reported on June 18.

The Office for the Fight against Corruption is investigating the IVJ company based in Banská Bystrica after it supplied equipment for separation of waste worth €760,000 to several municipalities in central Slovakia even though its original business was trade in cosmetics, the Sme daily reported.
Former central banker likely to chair new Council for Budgetary Responsibility
Ivan Šramko, a former governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), the country’s central bank, has been proposed to become head of the country’s new Council for Budgetary Responsibility by MPs serving on parliament’s committee for finance and budget. The council will have a supervisory role over economic management of the state, the TASR newswire reported.
Police officer charged in Hurbanovo shooting
An investigator of the Office of the Fight against Organised Crime has charged 51-year-old Milan J. from Svätý Peter, with premeditated murder, infringement of a home, and illegal possession of a gun. The charged person allegedly shot to death three Roma citizens and seriously injured another two on June 16 in Hurbanovo. If found guilty, the accused could spend up to 25 years in prison or life imprisonment, the SITA newswire reported.
PM Fico presents fiscal consolidation package
Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico has presented a fiscal consolidation package with 22 proposed measures to decrease the state deficit below 3 percent of GDP, the Sme daily reported on June 19.

UPDATE: Police shooting in Hurbanovo
THE OFFICE of the Special Prosecutor has charged a 51-year-old municipal police officer from Svätý Peter, Milan Juhász, with premeditated murder, violation of the sanctity of a home and carrying a concealed weapon, Michal Slivka, spokesman for the Police Presidium, told the TASR newswire on June 18. The police officer is in custody.

Finance Ministry ups its GDP growth forecast for 2012
Slovakia’s economy will grow at a considerably faster rate this year than was originally expected, according to the Finance Ministry which improved its prediction for GDP growth from 1.1 percent in its February 2012 assessment to 2.5 percent now, based on what the ministry said is better than expected economic growth in the first quarter and partly by an improving external environment, the SITA newswire reported on June 15.
Police continue to investigate shooting in Hurbanovo
Police do not believe that the shooting in Hurbanovo on Saturday, June 16 that resulted in the death of three men from one Roma family and injuries to two other relatives was racially motivated, explaining that if it had been racially motivated the man would have killed more people, the daily wrote on June 18.

Bongrain dairy firms merge
TWO FIRMS in Slovakia that process milk and produce cheeses – Milex Nové Mesto nad Váhom and Liptovská Mliekareň – will be merged, with Milex becoming the successor company according to officials of Bongrain, a French firm that controls both companies in Slovakia. The merger was announced on June 12 and will take effect on July 1, the SITA newswire reported.
SSE announces new CEO
SSE, Stredoslovenská Energetika, which supplies electricity to almost 700,000 customers in central Slovakia, has a new CEO, with Antoine Jourdain replacing Pierre Chazerain in the post. Chazerain, who served in the SSE post for more than four years, will take a management position in the headquarters of SSE’s parent company, Electricité de France in Paris, according to a news release from Jana Bolibruchová, SSE’s spokeswoman, as reported by the SITA newswire.
