SaS proposes same-sex registered partnerships

The opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party on Thursday, August 23, submitted to parliament a bill that includes a proposal to legalise same-sex registered partnerships from next year. In addition, the proposed bill concerning the rights of non-heterosexual people contains 23 other amending measures. Malinová case re-opened by prosecutor

THE INVESTIGATION of the case of Hedviga Malinová (who has since married and is now called Žáková), which has been making headlines for the past six years, still appears to be far from over. At the beginning of June the Office of the General Prosecutor asked for an expert examination of Malinová’s mental condition to be conducted at an outpatient clinic. The aim was to check the findings of Malinová’s doctors, László Sárközy and Jozef Hašto, who claimed that she was traumatised by the attack and suffered from depression.

Government to re-enact law on relationship between food producers and retail chains

Special legislation to regulate relationships between food producers and retail chains will be reintroduced, most probably as of January 1, the government decided at an away-from-home session in Nové Sady (Nitra Region) on Wednesday, August 22. A similar law introduced by Robert Fico's first government (2006-10) was scrapped by the 2010-12 centre-right government.

Korean carmaker Kia has started mass production of the second generation of its cee'd Sportswagon model at its plant in Teplička nad Váhom. The model should be one of Kia’s key products and support production growth this year. Its previous version made up more than a fifth of total production at Kia’s Slovak facility.

Slovak peacekeepers will not leave Cyprus any time soon, after the Slovak cabinet on Wednesday, August 22 approved a directive for the Slovak delegation at the UN General Assembly instructing it to pledge Slovakia’s continued contribution to the UNFICYP peacekeeping mission.

Radičová leads presidential opinion poll

A recent poll by the Focus agency suggests that former prime minister Iveta Radičová could win the next presidential election, due in 2014, the Plus Jeden Deň (PJD) daily reported. However, Radičová has said several times she will not run for the post. Radičová lost to Ivan Gašparovič in the run-off for the 2009 presidential election, when she won 44.47 percent of the vote. In the Focus poll Radičová was backed by 32.7 percent of respondent, outscoring current Prime Minister Robert Fico, who received 28.4 percent.

Court to decide on detention of Slovak woman involved in fatal car accident in Hungary

Hungarian police will propose to the country’s prosecutor’ office that a woman from Košice who was involved in a fatal car accident on Hungary’s M3 highway on Tuesday, August 21, remain in custody, the TASR newswire reported, citing Hungarian newswire MTI. Three people died in a fire resulting from the accident, in which their car and the Slovak woman’s reportedly collided; a fourth person managed to crawl out of the wreckage but suffered serious burns. The Slovak woman suffered only minor injuries.

The General Prosecutor’s Office has dropped charges against a female notary identified only as D. N. who had been accused by the team investigating the so-called Gorilla file of abuse of power by a public official. Ex-ministers charged over Tatras logging

Two former environment ministers, László Miklós of the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) and Jaroslav Izák of the Slovak National Party (SNS), have been charged with the crime of posing a threat to the environment.
